Tom is eight years old. He lives in the city with Mum and Dad. But now it is the holidays, and Tom is at Grandpa’s. Grandpa has a small house with a big garden.
Tom ma osiem lat. Mieszka z mamą i tatą w mieście. Ale teraz są wakacje i Tom jest u dziadka. Dziadek ma mały dom z dużym ogrodem.
In the garden there are tomatoes, lettuce and flowers. But the strawberries are the best. They are red and sweet. Grandpa loves his strawberries. Tom loves them too.
W ogrodzie są pomidory, sałata i kwiaty. Ale truskawki są najlepsze. Są czerwone i słodkie. Dziadek kocha swoje truskawki. Tom też je kocha.
“Tomorrow we’ll bake a strawberry cake,” says Grandpa in the evening. “The strawberries are ripe now.” Tom laughs. “Great! I’ll help!”
„Jutro pieczemy ciasto z truskawkami” – mówi dziadek wieczorem. „Truskawki są już dojrzałe”. Tom śmieje się. „Super! Pomagam!”
In the morning Tom and Grandpa go into the garden. Tom has a big bowl. But then Grandpa stops. “What is this?”
Rano Tom i dziadek idą do ogrodu. Tom ma dużą miskę. Ale wtedy dziadek zatrzymuje się. „Co to jest?”
Lots of strawberries are gone. Other strawberries are only half there. Somebody is eating Grandpa’s strawberries!
Wielu truskawek nie ma. Inne truskawki są tylko w połowie. Ktoś je truskawki dziadka!
“A thief!” shouts Grandpa. “A strawberry thief!”
„Złodziej!” – woła dziadek. „Złodziej truskawek!”
“Who is the thief, Grandpa?” asks Tom. “I don’t know,” says Grandpa. “Maybe a bird?”
„Kto jest złodziejem, dziadku?” – pyta Tom. „Nie wiem” – mówi dziadek. „Może ptak?”
A bird is sitting on the roof. It is black and has a yellow beak. It sings loudly. “Are you the thief?” asks Tom. The bird just keeps singing.
Na dachu siedzi ptak. Jest czarny i ma żółty dziób. Śpiewa głośno. „Czy ty jesteś złodziejem?” – pyta Tom. Ptak po prostu śpiewa dalej.
Then a dog comes into the garden. That is Bello. Bello lives with Mrs Klein, in the house on the left. He is big and brown, and he eats everything.
Wtedy do ogrodu przychodzi pies. To jest Bello. Bello mieszka u pani Klein, w domu po lewej stronie. Jest duży i brązowy, i je wszystko.
“Bello, are you the thief?” asks Grandpa. Bello wags his tail. He looks very nice.
„Bello, czy ty jesteś złodziejem?” – pyta dziadek. Bello macha ogonem. Wygląda bardzo miło.
In the afternoon Grandpa puts a net over the strawberries. “There,” he says. “Now no bird can get to my strawberries. And no dog.”
Po południu dziadek kładzie siatkę na truskawki. „No” – mówi. „Teraz żaden ptak nie dostanie się do moich truskawek. I żaden pies”.
