Tom berumur delapan tahun. Dia tinggal bersama Ibu dan Ayah di kota. Tetapi sekarang waktu liburan, dan Tom ada di rumah Kakek. Kakek punya sebuah rumah kecil dengan kebun yang besar.
Tom is eight years old. He lives in the city with Mum and Dad. But now it is the holidays, and Tom is at Grandpa’s. Grandpa has a small house with a big garden.
Di kebun ada tomat, selada, dan bunga. Tetapi stroberi adalah yang terbaik. Stroberi itu merah dan manis. Kakek sangat suka stroberinya. Tom juga menyukainya.
In the garden there are tomatoes, lettuce and flowers. But the strawberries are the best. They are red and sweet. Grandpa loves his strawberries. Tom loves them too.
“Besok kita membuat kue stroberi,” kata Kakek di malam hari. “Stroberi sekarang sudah matang.” Tom tertawa. “Bagus sekali! Aku membantu!”
“Tomorrow we’ll bake a strawberry cake,” says Grandpa in the evening. “The strawberries are ripe now.” Tom laughs. “Great! I’ll help!”
Di pagi hari, Tom dan Kakek pergi ke kebun. Tom membawa mangkuk besar. Tetapi kemudian Kakek berhenti. “Apa ini?”
In the morning Tom and Grandpa go into the garden. Tom has a big bowl. But then Grandpa stops. “What is this?”
Banyak stroberi hilang. Stroberi yang lain hanya tinggal setengah. Seseorang memakan stroberi milik Kakek!
Lots of strawberries are gone. Other strawberries are only half there. Somebody is eating Grandpa’s strawberries!
“Pencuri!” seru Kakek. “Pencuri stroberi!”
“A thief!” shouts Grandpa. “A strawberry thief!”
“Siapa pencurinya, Kakek?” tanya Tom. “Aku tidak tahu,” kata Kakek. “Mungkin seekor burung?”
“Who is the thief, Grandpa?” asks Tom. “I don’t know,” says Grandpa. “Maybe a bird?”
Di atas atap ada seekor burung. Burung itu berwarna hitam dan punya paruh kuning. Dia bernyanyi dengan keras. “Apakah kamu pencurinya?” tanya Tom. Burung itu terus bernyanyi.
A bird is sitting on the roof. It is black and has a yellow beak. It sings loudly. “Are you the thief?” asks Tom. The bird just keeps singing.
Kemudian seekor anjing masuk ke kebun. Itu Bello. Bello tinggal di rumah Ibu Klein, di rumah sebelah kiri. Dia besar dan cokelat, dan dia memakan semuanya.
Then a dog comes into the garden. That is Bello. Bello lives with Mrs Klein, in the house on the left. He is big and brown, and he eats everything.
“Bello, apakah kamu pencurinya?” tanya Kakek. Bello mengibaskan ekornya. Dia terlihat sangat ramah.
“Bello, are you the thief?” asks Grandpa. Bello wags his tail. He looks very nice.
Pada sore hari, Kakek memasang jaring di atas tanaman stroberi. “Nah,” katanya. “Sekarang tidak ada burung yang bisa mendekati stroberiku. Dan tidak ada anjing.”
In the afternoon Grandpa puts a net over the strawberries. “There,” he says. “Now no bird can get to my strawberries. And no dog.”
