A wave as high as a house crashed over the deck, nearly tearing Briant from the helm. He clung to the wet timber until his fingers burned and his arms trembled. Beside him, Gordon braced himself against the wheel, which fought back against the two boys like a wild beast. Above them, the wind howled through the rigging, and the night was so pitch-black that they could no longer see the ship’s bow.
«Mehr nach links!», brüllte Briant. «Sonst kippt sie uns um!»
“More to the left!” Briant roared. “Or she’ll capsize us!”
“I’m holding as hard as I can!” Gordon panted. “The wheel won’t budge!”
«Dann halten wir es eben zu zweit! Zieh, wenn ich ziehe!»
“Then we’ll hold it together! Pull when I pull!”
Up by the mast, Moko, the cabin boy, was battling a shredded piece of sail that flapped furiously in the storm. He was only twelve, but he was the only one on board who had ever worked on a ship. Without his skill, they would have gone down long ago, and everyone knew it, even if no one said it aloud.
It was supposed to have been a holiday voyage—six weeks along the coast of New Zealand with fourteen pupils from Chairman boarding school aboard the schooner Sloughi . But while the children were fast asleep, completely unaware, the coastline had vanished; and more than three weeks had passed since, with no one knowing where the wind was driving them.
The cabin door flew open. Doniphan fought his way out against the wind, his wet hair plastered to his forehead. He was thirteen, like Briant, but half a head taller, and he never let anyone forget that his father was a wealthy English landowner.
“Hand over the helm, Briant,” he ordered. “I’m the most capable here, and it’s an outrage that a younger boy is steering. Besides, I come from a better family than any Frenchman.”
“Gordon is the eldest,” Briant replied without turning around. “And the sea doesn’t care about your family, Doniphan.”
“Who do you think you’re talking to?” Doniphan snapped at him. “You don’t give the orders here!”
“I’m not ordering anyone. I’m just holding the helm,” Briant replied calmly. “If you want to help, go forward and lend Moko a hand with the sail.”
«Einem Schiffsjungen helfen? Ich?», rief Doniphan. «Das kommt nicht in Frage!»
“Help a ship’s boy? Me?” exclaimed Doniphan. “Out of the question!”
“Then get back below and let us work,” Gordon growled. “We can argue when we’re alive.”
