İki Dakika Geri

Saat büyükanneme aitti. Eski ve ağır, gümüşten. Arka tarafında iki harf var: “E. W.” Büyükannem onu ölmeden önce bana verdi.

The watch belonged to my grandmother. It is old and heavy, made of silver. On the back there are two letters: “E. W.” Grandma gave it to me before her death.

Adım Jonas, yirmi sekiz yaşındayım ve Leipzig’de oturuyorum. Ana tren istasyonuna yakın bir ofiste çalışıyorum. Hayatım sakin. Belki biraz fazla sakin.

My name is Jonas, I’m twenty-eight and I live in Leipzig. I work in an office near the main station. My life is quiet. Maybe a little too quiet.

Büyükannem o zaman sadece bir cümle söyledi: “Küçük düğmeye günde sadece bir kez bas.” Güldüm. “Yorgun ve kafası karışık” diye düşündüm.

Back then Grandma said only one sentence: “Press the little button only once a day.” I laughed. I thought she was tired and confused.

Saat bir yıl boyunca bir çekmecede durdu. Sonra diğer saatim bozuldu. Ben de büyükannemin saatini taktım.

For a year the watch lay in a drawer. Then my other watch broke. So I wore Grandma’s watch.

Saat hep tam çalıştı. Bir saniye erken değil, bir saniye geç değil. Sadece yan taraftaki küçük düğme benim için bir bilmeceydi.

It always kept exact time. Not a second too early, not a second too late. Only the little button on the side was a mystery to me.
