Der zehnte Brief

Die Blechdose

The tin box

I bring Giulia into the kitchen. Elena comes down in her dressing gown, sees the wet white dress and doesn’t ask anything. She makes tea. That is Elena.

“Open it with the person who needs it most,” I say. “Giulia, I think that is you.”

An Giulia.

In the box there is an old bank book, a gold necklace and a letter. Not to me. To Giulia.

She reads it out loud, with a shaking voice.

Zahl ihn zurück, und dann sag, was dein Herz sagt. Rosa.“

Giulia: “Dear Giulia, your mother told me about the bank. I am too old to fight the Ferris, but my money is not. Pay him back, and then say what your heart says. Rosa.”

Elena öffnet das Sparbuch. Sie sieht auf die Zahl. Sie sieht noch einmal hin.

Elena opens the bank book. She looks at the number. She looks again.

Elena: Zweihundertdreitausend Euro. Vierzig Jahre Limonade, Tom. Vierzig Jahre Zimmer mit Seeblick.

Elena: Two hundred and three thousand euros. Forty years of lemonade, Tom. Forty years of rooms with a view.

Giulia puts her face in her hands and cries. But it is a different kind of crying.
