Una riforma recuperata

Una guardia venne al calzaturificio della prigione, dove Jimmy Valentine stava cucendo assiduamente tomaie, e lo scortò all’ufficio principale. Lì il direttore consegnò a Jimmy la sua grazia, che era stata firmata quella mattina dal governatore.

A guard came to the prison shoe-shop, where Jimmy Valentine was assiduously stitching uppers, and escorted him to the front office. There the warden handed Jimmy his pardon, which had been signed that morning by the governor.

Jimmy la prese con aria stanca. Aveva scontato quasi dieci mesi di una condanna a quattro anni. Si aspettava di restare solo circa tre mesi, al massimo.

Jimmy took it in a tired kind of way. He had served nearly ten months of a four year sentence. He had expected to stay only about three months, at the longest.

Quando un uomo con tanti amici fuori come ne aveva Jimmy Valentine viene accolto in “gabbia”, non vale quasi la pena di tagliargli i capelli.

When a man with as many friends on the outside as Jimmy Valentine had is received in the “stir” it is hardly worth while to cut his hair.

“Ora, Valentine,” disse il direttore, “domattina uscirai. Fatti forza e diventa un uomo. In fondo non sei un cattivo ragazzo. Smetti di scassinare casseforti e vivi onestamente.”

“Now, Valentine,” said the warden, “you’ll go out in the morning. Brace up, and make a man of yourself. You’re not a bad fellow at heart. Stop cracking safes, and live straight.”

“Io?” disse Jimmy, sorpreso. “Ma se non ho mai scassinato una cassaforte in vita mia.”

“Me?” said Jimmy, in surprise. “Why, I never cracked a safe in my life.”

“Oh, no,” rise il direttore. “Certo che no. Vediamo un po’. Com’è che sei finito dentro per quel colpo di Springfield? È stato perché non hai voluto fornire un alibi per paura di compromettere qualcuno dell’alta società?”

“Oh, no,” laughed the warden. “Of course not. Let’s see, now. How was it you happened to get sent up on that Springfield job? Was it because you wouldn’t prove an alibi for fear of compromising somebody in extremely high-toned society?

O è stato semplicemente il caso di una giuria meschina che ce l’aveva con te? È sempre l’una o l’altra cosa con voi vittime innocenti.”

Or was it simply a case of a mean old jury that had it in for you? It’s always one or the other with you innocent victims.”

“Io?” disse Jimmy, ancora candidamente virtuoso. “Ma direttore, non sono mai stato a Springfield in vita mia!”

“Me?” said Jimmy, still blankly virtuous. “Why, warden, I never was in Springfield in my life!”

“Riportalo dentro, Cronin!” disse il direttore, “e dagli i vestiti per l’uscita. Aprilo alle sette di domattina e fallo venire al cortile. Faresti meglio a riflettere sul mio consiglio, Valentine.”

“Take him back, Cronin!” said the warden, “and fix him up with outgoing clothes. Unlock him at seven in the morning, and let him come to the bull-pen. Better think over my advice, Valentine.”

Alle sette e un quarto della mattina seguente Jimmy si trovava nell’ufficio esterno del direttore.

At a quarter past seven on the next morning Jimmy stood in the warden’s outer office.

Indossava un abito confezionato in modo scellerato e un paio di scarpe rigide e cigolanti che lo Stato fornisce ai suoi ospiti forzati dimessi.

He had on a suit of the villainously fitting, ready-made clothes and a pair of the stiff, squeaky shoes that the state furnishes to its discharged compulsory guests.

Senza curarsi del canto degli uccelli, degli alberi verdi che ondeggiavano e del profumo dei fiori, Jimmy si diresse dritto verso un ristorante.

Disregarding the song of the birds, the waving green trees, and the smell of the flowers, Jimmy headed straight for a restaurant.
