Alessandro e Bucefalo

Un giorno il re Filippo comprò un magnifico cavallo chiamato Bucefalo. Era un animale nobile e il re lo pagò a caro prezzo. Ma era selvaggio e indomabile, e nessuno riusciva a montarlo o a fare alcunché con lui.

One day King Philip bought a fine horse called Bucephalus. He was a noble animal, and the king paid a very high price for him. But he was wild and savage, and no man could mount him, or do anything at all with him.

Cercarono di frustarlo, ma questo lo rese solo peggiore. Alla fine il re ordinò ai suoi servi di portarlo via.

They tried to whip him, but that only made him worse. At last the king bade his servants take him away.

“È un peccato rovinare un cavallo così bello”, disse Alessandro, il giovane figlio del re. “Quegli uomini non sanno come trattarlo.”

“It is a pity to ruin so fine a horse as that,” said Alexander, the king’s young son. “Those men do not know how to treat him.”

“Forse tu puoi fare meglio di loro”, disse suo padre con disprezzo.

“Perhaps you can do better than they,” said his father scornfully.

“So”, disse Alessandro, “che se solo mi dessi il permesso di provare, potrei gestire questo cavallo meglio di chiunque altro.”

“I know,” said Alexander, “that, if you would only give me leave to try, I could manage this horse better than any one else.”

“E se non ci riuscissi, allora?” chiese Filippo.

“And if you fail to do so, what then?” asked Philip.

“Ti pagherò il prezzo del cavallo”, disse il ragazzo.

“I will pay you the price of the horse,” said the lad.

Mentre tutti ridevano, Alessandro corse verso Bucefalo e gli girò la testa verso il sole. Aveva notato che il cavallo aveva paura della propria ombra.

While everybody was laughing, Alexander ran up to Bucephalus, and turned his head toward the sun. He had noticed that the horse was afraid of his own shadow.

Poi parlò dolcemente al cavallo e lo accarezzò con la mano. Quando lo ebbe calmato un po’, fece un balzo rapido e saltò sulla groppa del cavallo.

He then spoke gently to the horse, and patted him with his hand. When he had quieted him a little, he made a quick spring, and leaped upon the horse’s back.

Tutti si aspettavano di vedere il ragazzo ucciso all’istante. Ma lui mantenne la posizione e lasciò che il cavallo corresse quanto voleva. Poco dopo, quando Bucefalo si fu stancato, Alessandro tirò le redini e tornò al posto dove stava suo padre.

Everybody expected to see the boy killed outright. But he kept his place, and let the horse run as fast as he would. By and by, when Bucephalus had become tired, Alexander reined him in, and rode back to the place where his father was standing.

Tutti gli uomini presenti esultarono quando videro che il ragazzo aveva dimostrato di essere il padrone del cavallo.

All the men who were there shouted when they saw that the boy had proved himself to be the master of the horse.

Saltò a terra e suo padre corse ad abbracciarlo.

He leaped to the ground, and his father ran and kissed him.

“Figlio mio”, disse il re, “la Macedonia è un posto troppo piccolo per te. Devi cercare un regno più grande che sia degno di te.”

“My son,” said the king, “Macedon is too small a place for you. You must seek a larger kingdom that will be worthy of you.”

Da allora, Alessandro e Bucefalo furono grandi amici. Si diceva che fossero sempre insieme, poiché quando si vedeva l’uno, l’altro non era mai lontano. Ma il cavallo non avrebbe mai permesso a nessuno di montarlo, se non al suo padrone.

After that, Alexander and Bucephalus were the best of friends. They were said to be always together, for when one of them was seen, the other was sure to be not far away. But the horse would never allow any one to mount him but his master.
