Cadmo ed Europa

I. IL TORO.

I. THE BULL.

In Asia viveva un re che aveva due figli, un maschio e una femmina. Il ragazzo si chiamava Cadmo e la ragazza Europa. Il paese del re era molto piccolo. Poteva stare sul tetto della sua casa e vederlo tutto.

In Asia there lived a king who had two children, a boy and a girl. The boy’s name was Cadmus, and the girl’s name was Europa. The king’s country was a very small one. He could stand on his house top and see the whole of it.

Da un lato c’erano le montagne e dall’altro il mare. Il re pensava che fosse il centro del mondo e non sapeva molto delle altre terre e degli altri popoli.

On one side of it there were mountains, and on the other side was the sea. The king thought that it was the center of the world, and he did not know much about other lands and people.

Eppure era molto felice nel suo piccolo regno e molto affezionato ai suoi figli. E aveva buone ragioni per essere orgoglioso di loro; poiché Cadmo crebbe diventando il giovane più coraggioso del paese, ed Europa la fanciulla più bella che si fosse mai vista.

Yet he was very happy in his own little kingdom, and very fond of his children. And he had good reason to be proud of them; for Cadmus grew up to be the bravest young man in the land, and Europa to be the fairest maiden that had ever been seen.

Ma alla fine giunsero per tutti loro giorni tristi.

But sad days came to them all at last.

Una mattina Europa uscì in un campo vicino alla riva del mare per raccogliere fiori. Il bestiame di suo padre era nel campo, a pascolare tra il dolce trifoglio. Erano tutti molto mansueti ed Europa li conosceva tutti per nome.

One morning Europa went out into a field near the seashore to pick flowers. Her father’s cattle were in the field, grazing among the sweet clover. They were all very tame, and Europa knew every one of them by name.

Il mandriano era sdraiato all’ombra sotto un albero, cercando di suonare un flauto di paglia. Europa aveva giocato nel campo mille volte prima e nessuno aveva mai pensato che le potesse capitare qualche male.

The herdsman was lying in the shade under a tree, trying to make music on a little flute of straw. Europa had played in the field a thousand times before, and no one had ever thought of any harm befalling her.

Quella mattina notò che c’era uno strano toro con la mandria. Era molto grande e bianco come la neve; e aveva occhi castani dolci che in qualche modo lo facevano sembrare molto gentile e buono.

That morning she noticed that there was a strange bull with the herd. He was very large and as white as snow; and he had soft brown eyes which somehow made him look very gentle and kind.

All’inizio non guardò nemmeno Europa, ma andò qua e là, mangiando l’erba tenera che cresceva tra il trifoglio. Ma quando lei ebbe riempito il grembiule di margherite e ranuncoli, lui si avvicinò lentamente a lei.

At first he did not even look at Europa, but went here and there, eating the tender grass which grew among the clover. But when she had gathered her apron full of daisies and buttercups, he came slowly towards her.

Lei non aveva affatto paura di lui; e così si fermò a guardarlo, era così bello. Lui le si avvicinò e le strofinò il braccio con il naso per dire “Buongiorno!”

She was not at all afraid of him; and so she stopped to look at him, he was so handsome. He came close to her, and rubbed her arm with his nose to say “Good-morning!”

Lei gli accarezzò la testa e il collo, e lui sembrò molto soddisfatto. Poi lei fece una ghirlanda di margherite e gliela appese al collo. Lui la guardò con i suoi occhi dolci e gentili, e sembrò ringraziarla; e dopo poco, si sdraiò tra il trifoglio.

She stroked his head and neck, and he seemed much pleased. Then she made a wreath of daisies, and hung it round his neck. He looked at her with his soft kind eyes, and seemed to thank her; and in a little while, he lay down among the clover.

Europa allora fece una ghirlanda più piccola e salì sulla sua schiena per intrecciarla attorno alle sue corna. Ma tutto a un tratto lui balzò in piedi e corse via così velocemente che Europa non poté fare nulla per fermarlo.

Europa then made a smaller wreath, and climbed upon his back to twine it round his horns. But all at once he sprang up, and ran away so swiftly that Europa could not help herself.

Non osò saltare giù mentre andava così veloce, e tutto ciò a cui riuscì a pensare fu di tenersi forte al suo collo e urlare molto forte.

She did not dare to jump off while he was going so fast, and all that she could think to do was to hold fast to his neck and scream very loud.
