Johnny-Cake

Es war einmal ein alter Mann, eine alte Frau und ein kleiner Junge. Eines Morgens backte die alte Frau einen Johnny-Cake und schob ihn zum Backen in den Ofen. „Pass du auf den Johnny-Cake auf, während dein Vater und ich draußen im Garten arbeiten.“

Once upon a time there was an old man, and an old woman, and a little boy. One morning the old woman made a Johnny-cake, and put it in the oven to bake. “You watch the Johnny-cake while your father and I go out to work in the garden.”

Also gingen der alte Mann und die alte Frau hinaus, begannen Kartoffeln zu hacken und ließen den kleinen Jungen beim Ofen zurück.

So the old man and the old woman went out and began to hoe potatoes, and left the little boy to tend the oven.

Doch er passte nicht die ganze Zeit auf, und plötzlich hörte er ein Geräusch, schaute auf, und die Ofentür sprang auf, und heraus sprang der Johnny-Cake, der sich immer weiter überschlagend auf die offene Tür des Hauses zurollte.

But he didn’t watch it all the time, and all of a sudden he heard a noise, and he looked up and the oven door popped open, and out of the oven jumped Johnny-cake, and went rolling along end over end, towards the open door of the house.

Der kleine Junge rannte los, um die Tür zu schließen, aber der Johnny-Cake war zu schnell für ihn und rollte durch die Tür, die Stufen hinunter und hinaus auf die Straße, lange bevor der kleine Junge ihn einholen konnte.

The little boy ran to shut the door, but Johnny-cake was too quick for him and rolled through the door, down the steps, and out into the road long before the little boy could catch him.

The little boy ran after him as fast as he could clip it, crying out to his father and mother, who heard the uproar, and threw down their hoes and gave chase too.

Doch der Johnny-Cake hängte alle drei weit ab und war bald außer Sicht, während sie sich völlig außer Atem auf eine Bank setzen mussten, um sich auszuruhen.

But Johnny-cake outran all three a long way, and was soon out of sight, while they had to sit down, all out of breath, on a bank to rest.

Der Johnny-Cake rollte weiter, und nach einer Weile kam er zu zwei Brunnenbauern, die von ihrer Arbeit aufblickten und riefen: „Wo gehst du hin, Johnny-Cake?“

On went Johnny-cake, and by-and-by he came to two well-diggers who looked up from their work and called out: “Where ye going, Johnny-cake?”

Er sagte: „Ich bin einem alten Mann, einer alten Frau und einem kleinen Jungen davongelaufen, und euch kann ich auch davonlaufen!“

He said: “I’ve outrun an old man, and an old woman, and a little boy, and I can outrun you too-o-o!”

„Das kannst du, ja? Das werden wir ja sehen!“, sagten sie; sie warfen ihre Spitzhacken weg und rannten ihm hinterher, konnten ihn aber nicht einholen und mussten sich bald am Straßenrand hinsetzen, um sich auszuruhen.

“Ye can, can ye? we’ll see about that?” said they; and they threw down their picks and ran after him, but couldn’t catch up with him, and soon they had to sit down by the roadside to rest.

Der Johnny-Cake rannte weiter, und nach einer Weile kam er zu zwei Grabenarbeitern, die gerade einen Graben aushoben. „Wo gehst du hin, Johnny-Cake?“, fragten sie.

On ran Johnny-cake, and by-and-by he came to two ditch-diggers who were digging a ditch. “Where ye going, Johnny-cake?” said they.

Er sagte: „Ich bin einem alten Mann, einer alten Frau, einem kleinen Jungen und zwei Brunnenbauern davongelaufen, und euch kann ich auch davonlaufen!“

He said: “I’ve outrun an old man, and an old woman, and a little boy, and two well-diggers, and I can outrun you too-o-o!”

„Das kannst du, ja? Das werden wir ja sehen!“, sagten sie; sie warfen ihre Spaten weg und rannten ihm ebenfalls hinterher. Aber der Johnny-Cake hängte auch sie bald ab, und da sie sahen, dass sie ihn niemals einholen würden, gaben sie die Verfolgung auf und setzten sich zum Ausruhen hin.

“Ye can, can ye? we’ll see about that!” said they; and they threw down their spades, and ran after him too. But Johnny-cake soon outstripped them also, and seeing they could never catch him, they gave up the chase and sat down to rest.

Der Johnny-Cake rollte weiter, und nach einer Weile kam er zu einem Bären. Der Bär sagte: „Wo gehst du hin, Johnny-Cake?“

On went Johnny-cake, and by-and-by he came to a bear. The bear said: “Where are ye going, Johnny-cake?”

Er sagte: „Ich bin einem alten Mann, einer alten Frau, einem kleinen Jungen, zwei Brunnenbauern und zwei Grabenarbeitern davongelaufen, und dir kann ich auch davonlaufen!“

He said: “I’ve outrun an old man, and an old woman and a little boy, and two well-diggers, and two ditch-diggers, and I can outrun you too-o-o!”
