Johnny-Cake

Il était une fois un vieil homme, une vieille femme et un petit garçon. Un matin, la vieille femme prépara un Johnny-cake et le mit au four pour le faire cuire. « Surveille le Johnny-cake pendant que ton père et moi allons travailler au jardin. »

Once upon a time there was an old man, and an old woman, and a little boy. One morning the old woman made a Johnny-cake, and put it in the oven to bake. “You watch the Johnny-cake while your father and I go out to work in the garden.”

Le vieil homme et la vieille femme sortirent donc pour biner les pommes de terre, laissant le petit garçon surveiller le four.

So the old man and the old woman went out and began to hoe potatoes, and left the little boy to tend the oven.

Mais il ne le surveilla pas tout le temps, et soudain, il entendit un bruit. Il leva les yeux et vit la porte du four s’ouvrir brusquement. Le Johnny-cake en sauta et se mit à rouler, cul par-dessus tête, vers la porte ouverte de la maison.

But he didn’t watch it all the time, and all of a sudden he heard a noise, and he looked up and the oven door popped open, and out of the oven jumped Johnny-cake, and went rolling along end over end, towards the open door of the house.

Le petit garçon courut pour fermer la porte, mais le Johnny-cake fut plus rapide que lui : il passa par la porte, dévala les marches et se retrouva sur la route bien avant que le petit garçon ne puisse l’attraper.

The little boy ran to shut the door, but Johnny-cake was too quick for him and rolled through the door, down the steps, and out into the road long before the little boy could catch him.

Le petit garçon se lança à sa poursuite aussi vite qu’il le put, criant après son père et sa mère qui, entendant le vacarme, jetèrent leurs binettes et se mirent à courir eux aussi.

The little boy ran after him as fast as he could clip it, crying out to his father and mother, who heard the uproar, and threw down their hoes and gave chase too.

Mais le Johnny-cake les distança tous les trois de loin et fut bientôt hors de vue, tandis qu’ils devaient s’asseoir, à bout de souffle, sur un talus pour se reposer.

But Johnny-cake outran all three a long way, and was soon out of sight, while they had to sit down, all out of breath, on a bank to rest.

Le Johnny-cake continua son chemin et finit par arriver devant deux puisatiers qui levèrent les yeux de leur travail et crièrent : « Où vas-tu, Johnny-cake ? »

On went Johnny-cake, and by-and-by he came to two well-diggers who looked up from their work and called out: “Where ye going, Johnny-cake?”

Il répondit : « J’ai semé un vieil homme, une vieille femme et un petit garçon, et je peux vous semer aussi-i-i ! »

He said: “I’ve outrun an old man, and an old woman, and a little boy, and I can outrun you too-o-o!”

« Ah oui, c’est ce qu’on va voir ! » dirent-ils. Ils jetèrent leurs pioches et se mirent à courir après lui, mais ne purent le rattraper et durent bientôt s’asseoir au bord de la route pour se reposer.

“Ye can, can ye? we’ll see about that?” said they; and they threw down their picks and ran after him, but couldn’t catch up with him, and soon they had to sit down by the roadside to rest.

Le Johnny-cake continua de courir et finit par arriver devant deux terrassiers qui creusaient un fossé. « Où vas-tu, Johnny-cake ? » dirent-ils.

On ran Johnny-cake, and by-and-by he came to two ditch-diggers who were digging a ditch. “Where ye going, Johnny-cake?” said they.

Il répondit : « J’ai semé un vieil homme, une vieille femme, un petit garçon et deux puisatiers, et je peux vous semer aussi-i-i ! »

He said: “I’ve outrun an old man, and an old woman, and a little boy, and two well-diggers, and I can outrun you too-o-o!”

« Ah oui, c’est ce qu’on va voir ! » dirent-ils. Ils jetèrent leurs pelles et se mirent à courir après lui aussi. Mais le Johnny-cake les distança bientôt, eux aussi, et voyant qu’ils ne pourraient jamais l’attraper, ils abandonnèrent la poursuite et s’assirent pour se reposer.

“Ye can, can ye? we’ll see about that!” said they; and they threw down their spades, and ran after him too. But Johnny-cake soon outstripped them also, and seeing they could never catch him, they gave up the chase and sat down to rest.

Le Johnny-cake continua son chemin et finit par arriver devant un ours. L’ours dit : « Où vas-tu, Johnny-cake ? »

On went Johnny-cake, and by-and-by he came to a bear. The bear said: “Where are ye going, Johnny-cake?”

Il répondit : « J’ai semé un vieil homme, une vieille femme, un petit garçon, deux puisatiers et deux terrassiers, et je peux te semer aussi-i-i ! »

He said: “I’ve outrun an old man, and an old woman and a little boy, and two well-diggers, and two ditch-diggers, and I can outrun you too-o-o!”
