Le roi Knut sur le rivage

Cent ans ou plus après l’époque d’Alfred le Grand, il y avait un roi d’Angleterre nommé Knut. Le roi Knut était danois ; mais les Danois n’étaient plus aussi féroces et cruels qu’ils l’avaient été lorsqu’ils étaient en guerre avec le roi Alfred.

A hundred years or more after the time of Alfred the Great there was a king of England named Canute. King Canute was a Dane; but the Danes were not so fierce and cruel then as they had been when they were at war with King Alfred.

Les grands hommes et les officiers qui entouraient le roi Knut ne cessaient de le louer.

The great men and officers who were around King Canute were always praising him.

« Vous êtes le plus grand homme qui ait jamais vécu », disait l’un.

“You are the greatest man that ever lived,” one would say.

Puis un autre disait : « Ô roi ! Il ne pourra jamais y avoir un autre homme aussi puissant que vous. »

Then another would say, “O king! there can never be another man so mighty as you.”

Et un autre encore disait : « Grand Knut, il n’y a rien au monde qui ose vous désobéir. »

And another would say, “Great Canute, there is nothing in the world that dares to disobey you.”

Le roi était un homme sensé, et il se lassa beaucoup d’entendre de tels discours insensés.

The king was a man of sense, and he grew very tired of hearing such foolish speeches.

Un jour, il était au bord de la mer, et ses officiers étaient avec lui. Ils le louaient, comme ils avaient l’habitude de le faire.

One day he was by the seashore, and his officers were with him. They were praising him, as they were in the habit of doing.

Il pensa qu’il allait leur donner une leçon, et il leur ordonna donc de placer sa chaise sur la plage, tout près du bord de l’eau.

He thought that now he would teach them a lesson, and so he bade them set his chair on the beach close by the edge of the water.

« Suis-je le plus grand homme du monde ? » demanda-t-il.

“Am I the greatest man in the world?” he asked.

« Ô roi ! » s’écrièrent-ils, « il n’y a personne d’aussi puissant que vous. »

“O king!” they cried, “there is no one so mighty as you.”

« Toutes choses m’obéissent-elles ? » demanda-t-il.

“Do all things obey me?” he asked.

« Il n’y a rien qui ose vous désobéir, ô roi ! » dirent-ils. « Le monde s’incline devant vous et vous rend hommage. »

“There is nothing that dares to disobey you, O king!” they said. “The world bows before you, and gives you honor.”

« La mer m’obéira-t-elle ? » demanda-t-il ; et il regarda les petites vagues qui venaient lécher le sable à ses pieds.

“Will the sea obey me?” he asked; and he looked down at the little waves which were lapping the sand at his feet.

Les officiers insensés furent déconcertés, mais ils n’osèrent pas dire « Non ».

The foolish officers were puzzled, but they did not dare to say “No.”
