Re Canuto sulla riva del mare

Cento anni o più dopo l’epoca di Alfredo il Grande, c’era un re d’Inghilterra di nome Canuto. Re Canuto era danese; ma i danesi non erano più così feroci e crudeli come lo erano stati quando erano in guerra con re Alfredo.

A hundred years or more after the time of Alfred the Great there was a king of England named Canute. King Canute was a Dane; but the Danes were not so fierce and cruel then as they had been when they were at war with King Alfred.

I grandi uomini e gli ufficiali che circondavano re Canuto lo lodavano continuamente.

The great men and officers who were around King Canute were always praising him.

“Voi siete il più grande uomo che sia mai esistito”, diceva uno.

“You are the greatest man that ever lived,” one would say.

Poi un altro diceva: “O re! Non potrà mai esserci un altro uomo potente quanto voi”.

Then another would say, “O king! there can never be another man so mighty as you.”

E un altro ancora diceva: “Grande Canuto, non c’è nulla al mondo che osi disobbedirvi”.

And another would say, “Great Canute, there is nothing in the world that dares to disobey you.”

Il re era un uomo di buon senso e si stancò molto di ascoltare discorsi così sciocchi.

The king was a man of sense, and he grew very tired of hearing such foolish speeches.

Un giorno si trovava in riva al mare con i suoi ufficiali. Lo stavano lodando, come erano soliti fare.

One day he was by the seashore, and his officers were with him. They were praising him, as they were in the habit of doing.

Pensò che ora avrebbe dato loro una lezione, così ordinò che gli ponessero la sedia sulla spiaggia, vicino al bordo dell’acqua.

He thought that now he would teach them a lesson, and so he bade them set his chair on the beach close by the edge of the water.

“Sono io l’uomo più grande del mondo?” chiese.

“Am I the greatest man in the world?” he asked.

“O re!” gridarono, “non c’è nessuno potente quanto voi”.

“O king!” they cried, “there is no one so mighty as you.”

“Tutte le cose mi obbediscono?” chiese.

“Do all things obey me?” he asked.

“Non c’è nulla che osi disobbedirvi, o re!” dissero. “Il mondo si inchina davanti a voi e vi rende onore”.

“There is nothing that dares to disobey you, O king!” they said. “The world bows before you, and gives you honor.”

“Il mare mi obbedirà?” chiese; e guardò le piccole onde che lambivano la sabbia ai suoi piedi.

“Will the sea obey me?” he asked; and he looked down at the little waves which were lapping the sand at his feet.

Gli sciocchi ufficiali erano confusi, ma non osarono dire di “no”.

The foolish officers were puzzled, but they did not dare to say “No.”
