Jack le Paresseux

Il était une fois un garçon nommé Jack, qui vivait avec sa mère sur une lande.

Once upon a time there was a boy whose name was Jack, and he lived with his mother on a common.

Ils étaient très pauvres, et la vieille femme gagnait sa vie en filant, mais Jack était si paresseux qu’il ne faisait rien d’autre que de se prélasser au soleil par temps chaud, et de s’asseoir au coin de l’âtre en hiver. C’est pourquoi on l’appelait Jack le Paresseux.

They were very poor, and the old woman got her living by spinning, but Jack was so lazy that he would do nothing but bask in the sun in the hot weather, and sit by the corner of the hearth in the winter-time. So they called him Lazy Jack.

Sa mère n’arrivait pas à lui faire faire quoi que ce soit, et finit par lui dire, un lundi, que s’il ne commençait pas à travailler pour gagner sa pitance, elle le mettrait à la porte pour qu’il se débrouille comme il pourrait.

His mother could not get him to do anything for her, and at last told him, one Monday, that if he did not begin to work for his porridge she would turn him out to get his living as he could.

Cela réveilla Jack, qui sortit et s’engagea pour le lendemain chez un fermier voisin pour un sou ; mais en rentrant chez lui, n’ayant jamais eu d’argent auparavant, il le perdit en traversant un ruisseau.

This roused Jack, and he went out and hired himself for the next day to a neighbouring farmer for a penny; but as he was coming home, never having had any money before, he lost it in passing over a brook.

« Espèce d’idiot », dit sa mère, « tu aurais dû le mettre dans ta poche. » « Je le ferai la prochaine fois », répondit Jack.

“You stupid boy,” said his mother, “you should have put it in your pocket.” “I’ll do so another time,” replied Jack.

Le mercredi, Jack ressortit et s’engagea chez un vacher, qui lui donna un pot de lait pour sa journée de travail. Jack prit le pot et le mit dans la grande poche de sa veste, le renversant entièrement bien avant d’arriver chez lui. « Mon Dieu ! »

On Wednesday, Jack went out again and hired himself to a cow-keeper, who gave him a jar of milk for his day’s work. Jack took the jar and put it into the large pocket of his jacket, spilling it all, long before he got home. “Dear me!”

dit la vieille femme ; « tu aurais dû le porter sur ta tête. » « Je le ferai la prochaine fois », dit Jack.

said the old woman; “you should have carried it on your head.” “I’ll do so another time,” said Jack.

Le jeudi, Jack s’engagea de nouveau chez un fermier, qui accepta de lui donner un fromage à la crème pour ses services. Le soir, Jack prit le fromage et rentra chez lui en le portant sur sa tête.

So on Thursday, Jack hired himself again to a farmer, who agreed to give him a cream cheese for his services. In the evening Jack took the cheese, and went home with it on his head.

Quand il arriva à la maison, le fromage était tout gâté, une partie ayant été perdue et l’autre emmêlée dans ses cheveux. « Espèce d’abruti », dit sa mère, « tu aurais dû le porter très soigneusement dans tes mains. » « Je le ferai la prochaine fois », répondit Jack.

By the time he got home the cheese was all spoilt, part of it being lost, and part matted with his hair. “You stupid lout,” said his mother, “you should have carried it very carefully in your hands.” “I’ll do so another time,” replied Jack.

Le vendredi, Jack le Paresseux ressortit et s’engagea chez un boulanger, qui ne lui donna rien d’autre pour son travail qu’un gros chat mâle.

On Friday, Lazy Jack again went out, and hired himself to a baker, who would give him nothing for his work but a large tom-cat.

Jack prit le chat et commença à le porter très soigneusement dans ses mains, mais en peu de temps, le minou l’égratigna si fort qu’il fut contraint de le lâcher.

Jack took the cat, and began carrying it very carefully in his hands, but in a short time pussy scratched him so much that he was compelled to let it go.

Quand il rentra chez lui, sa mère lui dit : « Petit imbécile, tu aurais dû l’attacher avec une ficelle et le traîner derrière toi. » « Je le ferai la prochaine fois », dit Jack.

When he got home, his mother said to him, “You silly fellow, you should have tied it with a string, and dragged it along after you.” “I’ll do so another time,” said Jack.

Le samedi, Jack s’engagea chez un boucher, qui le récompensa par le beau cadeau d’une épaule de mouton.

So on Saturday, Jack hired himself to a butcher, who rewarded him by the handsome present of a shoulder of mutton.

Jack prit le mouton, l’attacha à une ficelle et le traîna derrière lui dans la boue, si bien qu’à son arrivée à la maison, la viande était complètement gâtée.

Jack took the mutton, tied it to a string, and trailed it along after him in the dirt, so that by the time he had got home the meat was completely spoilt.
