El haz de leña

Un padre tenía una familia de hijos que se peleaban constantemente entre sí.

A certain Father had a family of Sons, who were forever quarreling among themselves.

Ninguna palabra que pudiera decirles servía de nada, así que buscó en su mente algún ejemplo muy impactante que les hiciera ver que la discordia los llevaría a la desgracia.

No words he could say did the least good, so he cast about in his mind for some very striking example that should make them see that discord would lead them to misfortune.

Un día, cuando las peleas habían sido mucho más violentas de lo habitual y cada uno de los hijos estaba de mal humor, les pidió a uno de ellos que le trajera un haz de leña.

One day when the quarreling had been much more violent than usual and each of the Sons was moping in a surly manner, he asked one of them to bring him a bundle of sticks.

Luego, entregando el haz a cada uno de sus hijos por turno, les dijo que intentaran romperlo. Pero aunque cada uno hizo su mejor esfuerzo, ninguno pudo hacerlo.

Then handing the bundle to each of his Sons in turn he told them to try to break it. But although each one tried his best, none was able to do so.

El padre entonces desató el haz y dio los palos a sus hijos para que los rompieran uno a uno. Esto lo hicieron con mucha facilidad.

The Father then untied the bundle and gave the sticks to his Sons to break one by one. This they did very easily.

“Hijos míos”, dijo el padre, “¿no ven lo cierto que es que si están de acuerdo entre ustedes y se ayudan mutuamente, será imposible que sus enemigos los dañen?

“My Sons,” said the Father, “do you not see how certain it is that if you agree with each other and help each other, it will be impossible for your enemies to injure you?

Pero si están divididos entre ustedes, no serán más fuertes que un solo palo de ese haz”.

But if you are divided among yourselves, you will be no stronger than a single stick in that bundle.”

En la unión está la fuerza.
