L'amico devoto

Una mattina il vecchio ratto d’acqua mise il muso fuori dalla sua tana. Aveva occhi vivaci come perline, baffi grigi e rigidi, e la coda sembrava un lungo pezzo di gomma nera.

One morning the old Water-rat put his head out of his hole. He had bright beady eyes and stiff grey whiskers and his tail was like a long bit of black india-rubber.

Le anatroccole nuotavano nello stagno, sembrando un gruppo di canarini gialli, e la loro madre, che era bianca candida con le zampe rosso vivo, cercava di insegnare loro a stare a testa in giù nell’acqua.

The little ducks were swimming about in the pond, looking just like a lot of yellow canaries, and their mother, who was pure white with real red legs, was trying to teach them how to stand on their heads in the water.

«Non sarete mai nell’alta società se non sapete stare a testa in giù», continuava a dire loro; e di tanto in tanto mostrava come si facesse. Ma le anatroccole non le prestavano alcuna attenzione.

“You will never be in the best society unless you can stand on your heads,” she kept saying to them; and every now and then she showed them how it was done. But the little ducks paid no attention to her.

Erano così piccole che non sapevano affatto quale vantaggio fosse far parte della società.

They were so young that they did not know what an advantage it is to be in society at all.

«Che figli disubbidienti!» esclamò il vecchio ratto d’acqua; «meriterebbero davvero di essere annegati».

“What disobedient children!” cried the old Water-rat; “they really deserve to be drowned.”

«Niente affatto», rispose l’anatra, «ognuno deve pur cominciare, e i genitori non possono essere mai abbastanza pazienti».

“Nothing of the kind,” answered the Duck, “every one must make a beginning, and parents cannot be too patient.”

«Ah! Non so nulla dei sentimenti dei genitori», disse il ratto d’acqua; «non sono un uomo di famiglia. Anzi, non mi sono mai sposato e non ho alcuna intenzione di farlo. L’amore va bene a modo suo, ma l’amicizia è molto più elevata.

“Ah! I know nothing about the feelings of parents,” said the Water-rat; “I am not a family man. In fact, I have never been married, and I never intend to be. Love is all very well in its way, but friendship is much higher.

Davvero, non conosco nulla al mondo che sia più nobile o più raro di un’amicizia devota».

Indeed, I know of nothing in the world that is either nobler or rarer than a devoted friendship.”

«E quale sarebbe, di grazia, la tua idea sui doveri di un amico devoto?» chiese un fanello verde, che se ne stava seduto su un salice lì vicino e aveva origliato la conversazione.

“And what, pray, is your idea of the duties of a devoted friend?” asked a Green Linnet, who was sitting in a willow-tree hard by, and had overheard the conversation.

«Sì, è proprio quello che voglio sapere», disse l’anatra; e nuotò fino all’estremità dello stagno, mettendosi a testa in giù per dare un buon esempio ai suoi figli.

“Yes, that is just what I want to know,” said the Duck; and she swam away to the end of the pond, and stood upon her head, in order to give her children a good example.

«Che domanda sciocca!» esclamò il ratto d’acqua. «Mi aspetterei che il mio amico devoto fosse devoto a me, naturalmente».

“What a silly question!” cried the Water-rat. “I should expect my devoted friend to be devoted to me, of course.”

«E tu cosa faresti in cambio?» disse l’uccellino, dondolandosi su un ramoscello d’argento e sbattendo le sue minuscole ali.

“And what would you do in return?” said the little bird, swinging upon a silver spray, and flapping his tiny wings.

«Non ti capisco», rispose il ratto d’acqua.

“I don’t understand you,” answered the Water-rat.

«Lascia che ti racconti una storia sull’argomento», disse il fanello.

“Let me tell you a story on the subject,” said the Linnet.
