Le Chien qui lâche sa proie pour l'ombre

Un Chien, à qui le boucher avait jeté un os, se dépêchait de rentrer chez lui avec son prix aussi vite qu’il le pouvait. En traversant une passerelle étroite, il lui arriva de regarder en bas et il se vit reflété dans l’eau calme comme dans un miroir.

A Dog, to whom the butcher had thrown a bone, was hurrying home with his prize as fast as he could go. As he crossed a narrow footbridge, he happened to look down and saw himself reflected in the quiet water as if in a mirror.

Mais le Chien avide crut voir un vrai Chien portant un os bien plus gros que le sien.

But the greedy Dog thought he saw a real Dog carrying a bone much bigger than his own.

S’il s’était arrêté pour réfléchir, il aurait su mieux faire. Mais au lieu de réfléchir, il lâcha son os et bondit sur le Chien dans la rivière, pour finalement se retrouver à nager pour sauver sa peau afin d’atteindre la rive.

If he had stopped to think he would have known better. But instead of thinking, he dropped his bone and sprang at the Dog in the river, only to find himself swimming for dear life to reach the shore.

Finalement, il réussit à se hisser hors de l’eau, et tandis qu’il se tenait là, pensant tristement au bon os qu’il avait perdu, il réalisa quel Chien stupide il avait été.

At last he managed to scramble out, and as he stood sadly thinking about the good bone he had lost, he realized what a stupid Dog he had been.

Il est très stupide d’être avide.

It is very foolish to be greedy.
