Il cane e il suo riflesso

Un cane, a cui il macellaio aveva gettato un osso, stava correndo a casa con il suo bottino il più velocemente possibile. Mentre attraversava una stretta passerella, gli capitò di guardare in basso e vide se stesso riflesso nell’acqua calma come in uno specchio.

A Dog, to whom the butcher had thrown a bone, was hurrying home with his prize as fast as he could go. As he crossed a narrow footbridge, he happened to look down and saw himself reflected in the quiet water as if in a mirror.

Ma il cane avido pensò di vedere un vero cane che portava un osso molto più grande del suo.

But the greedy Dog thought he saw a real Dog carrying a bone much bigger than his own.

Se si fosse fermato a riflettere, avrebbe capito meglio. Ma invece di pensare, lasciò cadere il suo osso e si lanciò contro il cane nel fiume, solo per ritrovarsi a nuotare disperatamente per raggiungere la riva.

If he had stopped to think he would have known better. But instead of thinking, he dropped his bone and sprang at the Dog in the river, only to find himself swimming for dear life to reach the shore.

Alla fine riuscì ad arrampicarsi fuori e, mentre stava tristemente pensando al buon osso che aveva perso, si rese conto di quanto fosse stato un cane stupido.

At last he managed to scramble out, and as he stood sadly thinking about the good bone he had lost, he realized what a stupid Dog he had been.

È molto sciocco essere avidi.

It is very foolish to be greedy.
