La Nave Bianca

Re Enrico, il dotto studioso, aveva un unico figlio, di nome Guglielmo, che amava teneramente. Il giovane era nobile e coraggioso, e tutti speravano che un giorno sarebbe diventato il Re d’Inghilterra.

King Henry, the Handsome Scholar, had one son, named William, whom he dearly loved. The young man was noble and brave, and everybody hoped that he would some day be the King of England.

Un’estate il Principe Guglielmo andò con suo padre oltre il mare per occuparsi delle loro terre in Francia. Furono accolti con gioia da tutto il loro popolo lì, e il giovane principe era così galante e gentile che conquistò l’amore di chiunque lo vedesse.

One summer Prince William went with his father across the sea to look after their lands in France. They were welcomed with joy by all their people there, and the young prince was so gallant and kind, that he won the love of all who saw him.

Ma alla fine giunse il momento per loro di tornare in Inghilterra. Il re, con i suoi saggi e i suoi coraggiosi cavalieri, salpò presto durante la giornata; ma il Principe Guglielmo con i suoi amici più giovani attese ancora un po’.

But at last the time came for them to go back to England. The king, with his wise men and brave knights, set sail early in the day; but Prince William with his younger friends waited a little while.

Avevano trascorso un periodo così gioioso in Francia che non avevano alcuna fretta di andar via.

They had had so joyous a time in France that they were in no great haste to tear themselves away.

Poi salirono a bordo della nave che li attendeva per riportarli a casa. Era una bellissima nave con vele bianche e alberi bianchi, ed era stata appositamente attrezzata per questo viaggio.

Then they went on board of the ship which was waiting to carry them home. It was a beautiful ship with white sails and white masts, and it had been fitted up on purpose for this voyage.

Il mare era calmo, i venti favorevoli e nessuno pensava al pericolo. Sulla nave, tutto era stato organizzato per rendere il viaggio piacevole. C’erano musica e danze, e tutti erano allegri e felici.

The sea was smooth, the winds were fair, and no one thought of danger. On the ship, everything had been arranged to make the trip a pleasant one. There was music and dancing, and everybody was merry and glad.

Il sole era tramontato prima che la nave dalle vele bianche fosse uscita completamente dalla baia. Ma che importava? La luna era piena e avrebbe dato luce a sufficienza; e prima dell’alba del giorno seguente, il mare stretto sarebbe stato attraversato.

The sun had gone down before the white-winged vessel was fairly out of the bay. But what of that? The moon was at its full, and it would give light enough; and before the dawn of the morrow, the narrow sea would be crossed.

E così il principe e i giovani che erano con lui si abbandonarono all’allegria, ai banchetti e alla gioia.

And so the prince, and the young people who were with him, gave themselves up to merriment and feasting and joy.

Le prime ore della notte passarono; e poi si levò un grido d’allarme sul ponte. Un momento dopo ci fu un grande schianto. La nave aveva colpito una roccia. L’acqua irruppe. Stava affondando.

The earlier hours of the night passed by; and then there was a cry of alarm on deck. A moment afterward there was a great crash. The ship had struck upon a rock. The water rushed in. She was sinking.

Ah, dove erano ora coloro che poco prima erano stati così spensierati e felici?

Ah, where now were those who had lately been so heart-free and glad?

Ogni cuore era pieno di paura. Nessuno sapeva cosa fare. Una piccola barca fu rapidamente calata in mare e il principe, con alcuni dei suoi amici più coraggiosi, vi saltò dentro. Si allontanarono proprio mentre la nave stava iniziando a sprofondare sotto le onde. Si sarebbero salvati?

Every heart was full of fear. No one knew what to do. A small boat was quickly launched, and the prince with a few of his bravest friends leaped into it. They pushed off just as the ship was beginning to settle beneath the waves. Would they be saved?

Avevano remato a malapena dieci iarde dalla nave, quando si levò un grido da parte di coloro che erano rimasti indietro.

They had rowed hardly ten yards from the ship, when there was a cry from among those that were left behind.

“Remate indietro!” gridò il principe. “È la mia sorellina. Deve essere salvata!”

“Row back!” cried the prince. “It is my little sister. She must be saved!”

Gli uomini non osarono disobbedire. La barca fu nuovamente accostata alla nave che affondava. Il principe si alzò in piedi e tese le braccia verso sua sorella. In quel momento la nave ebbe un forte sbandamento in avanti tra le onde.

The men did not dare to disobey. The boat was again brought alongside of the sinking vessel. The prince stood up, and held out his arms for his sister. At that moment the ship gave a great lurch forward into the waves.
