Les trois hommes de Gotham

Il existe en Angleterre une ville appelée Gotham, et bien des histoires joyeuses sont racontées au sujet des gens étranges qui y vivaient autrefois.

There is a town in England called Gotham, and many merry stories are told of the queer people who used to live there.

Un jour, deux hommes de Gotham se rencontrèrent sur un pont. Hodge revenait du marché et Peter s’y rendait.

One day two men of Gotham met on a bridge. Hodge was coming from the market, and Peter was going to the market.

« Où vas-tu ? » demanda Hodge.

“Where are you going?” said Hodge.

« Je vais au marché pour acheter des moutons », répondit Peter.

“I am going to the market to buy sheep,” said Peter.

« Acheter des moutons ? » dit Hodge. « Et par quel chemin les ramèneras-tu chez toi ? »

“Buy sheep?” said Hodge. “And which way will you bring them home?”

« Je les ferai passer sur ce pont », dit Peter.

“I shall bring them over this bridge,” said Peter.

« Non, tu ne le feras pas », dit Hodge.

“No, you shall not,” said Hodge.

« Si, je le ferai », dit Peter.

“Yes, but I will,” said Peter.

« Tu ne le feras pas », dit Hodge.

“You shall not,” said Hodge.

« Je le ferai », dit Peter.

“I will,” said Peter.

Alors ils frappèrent le sol avec leurs bâtons comme s’il y avait eu une centaine de moutons entre eux.

Then they beat with their sticks on the ground as though there had been a hundred sheep between them.

« Fais attention ! » cria Peter. « Veille à ce que mes moutons ne sautent pas sur le pont. »

“Take care!” cried Peter. “Look out that my sheep don’t jump on the bridge.”

« Je me moque bien de savoir où ils sautent », dit Hodge ; « mais ils ne passeront pas par ici. »

“I care not where they jump,” said Hodge; “but they shall not go over it.”

« Mais ils passeront », dit Peter.

“But they shall,” said Peter.
