Androcles y el león

En Roma hubo una vez un esclavo pobre cuyo nombre era Androclo. Su amo era un hombre cruel y tan poco amable con él que, al final, Androclo se escapó.

In Rome there was once a poor slave whose name was Androclus. His master was a cruel man, and so unkind to him that at last Androclus ran away.

Se escondió en un bosque salvaje durante muchos días; pero no había comida que encontrar, y se volvió tan débil y enfermizo que pensó que moriría. Así que un día se arrastró hasta una cueva, se tumbó y pronto se quedó profundamente dormido.

He hid himself in a wild wood for many days; but there was no food to be found, and he grew so weak and sick that he thought he should die. So one day he crept into a cave and lay down, and soon he was fast asleep.

Al poco tiempo, un gran ruido lo despertó. Un león había entrado en la cueva y rugía con fuerza. Androclo tuvo mucho miedo, pues estaba seguro de que la bestia lo mataría.

After a while a great noise woke him up. A lion had come into the cave, and was roaring loudly. Androclus was very much afraid, for he felt sure that the beast would kill him.

Sin embargo, pronto vio que el león no estaba enfadado, sino que cojeaba como si le doliera la pata.

Soon, however, he saw that the lion was not angry, but that he limped as though his foot hurt him.

Entonces, Androclo cobró tal valentía que tomó la pata herida del león para ver qué le pasaba. El león se quedó muy quieto y frotó su cabeza contra el hombro del hombre. Parecía decir:

Then Androclus grew so bold that he took hold of the lion’s lame paw to see what was the matter. The lion stood quite still, and rubbed his head against the man’s shoulder. He seemed to say,--

“Sé que me ayudarás”.

“I know that you will help me.”

Androclo levantó la pata del suelo y vio que era una espina larga y afilada la que tanto le dolía al león. Tomó el extremo de la espina con los dedos; luego dio un tirón fuerte y rápido, y salió. El león se llenó de alegría.

Androclus lifted the paw from the ground, and saw that it was a long, sharp thorn which hurt the lion so much. He took the end of the thorn in his fingers; then he gave a strong, quick pull, and out it came. The lion was full of joy.

Saltó de un lado a otro como un perro y lamió las manos y los pies de su nuevo amigo.

He jumped about like a dog, and licked the hands and feet of his new friend.

Androclo ya no tuvo miedo después de esto; y cuando llegó la noche, él y el león se acostaron y durmieron uno al lado del otro.

Androclus was not at all afraid after this; and when night came, he and the lion lay down and slept side by side.

Durante mucho tiempo, el león le trajo comida a Androclo todos los días; y ambos se hicieron tan buenos amigos que Androclo encontró que su nueva vida era muy feliz.

For a long time, the lion brought food to Androclus every day; and the two became such good friends, that Androclus found his new life a very happy one.

Un día, unos soldados que pasaban por el bosque encontraron a Androclo en la cueva. Sabían quién era, así que lo llevaron de vuelta a Roma.

One day some soldiers who were passing through the wood found Androclus in the cave. They knew who he was, and so took him back to Rome.

Era ley en aquel entonces que todo esclavo que se escapara de su amo debía ser obligado a luchar contra un león hambriento. Así que un león feroz fue encerrado durante un tiempo sin comida, y se fijó una fecha para la pelea.

It was the law at that time that every slave who ran away from his master should be made to fight a hungry lion. So a fierce lion was shut up for a while without food, and a time was set for the fight.

Cuando llegó el día, miles de personas se agolparon para ver el espectáculo. En aquella época, la gente acudía a esos lugares de forma muy parecida a como hoy en día la gente va a ver un espectáculo de circo o un partido de béisbol.

When the day came, thousands of people crowded to see the sport. They went to such places at that time very much as people now-a-days go to see a circus show or a game of base-ball.

Se abrió la puerta y el pobre Androclo fue introducido. Estaba casi muerto de miedo, pues ya se podían oír los rugidos del león. Miró hacia arriba y vio que no había piedad en los miles de rostros que lo rodeaban.

The door opened, and poor Androclus was brought in. He was almost dead with fear, for the roars of the lion could already be heard. He looked up, and saw that there was no pity in the thousands of faces around him.
