Androclo e il leone

A Roma c’era una volta un povero schiavo di nome Androclo. Il suo padrone era un uomo crudele e così scortese con lui che alla fine Androclo scappò.

In Rome there was once a poor slave whose name was Androclus. His master was a cruel man, and so unkind to him that at last Androclus ran away.

Si nascose in un bosco selvaggio per molti giorni; ma non c’era cibo da trovare e divenne così debole e malato che pensò di morire. Così un giorno si trascinò in una grotta e si sdraiò, e presto si addormentò profondamente.

He hid himself in a wild wood for many days; but there was no food to be found, and he grew so weak and sick that he thought he should die. So one day he crept into a cave and lay down, and soon he was fast asleep.

Dopo un po’ un gran rumore lo svegliò. Un leone era entrato nella grotta e ruggiva forte. Androclo ebbe molta paura, perché era certo che la bestia lo avrebbe ucciso.

After a while a great noise woke him up. A lion had come into the cave, and was roaring loudly. Androclus was very much afraid, for he felt sure that the beast would kill him.

Presto, tuttavia, vide che il leone non era arrabbiato, ma che zoppicava come se gli facesse male una zampa.

Soon, however, he saw that the lion was not angry, but that he limped as though his foot hurt him.

Allora Androclo prese coraggio e afferrò la zampa ferita del leone per vedere cosa fosse successo. Il leone rimase del tutto immobile e strofinò la testa contro la spalla dell’uomo. Sembrava dire:

Then Androclus grew so bold that he took hold of the lion’s lame paw to see what was the matter. The lion stood quite still, and rubbed his head against the man’s shoulder. He seemed to say,--

“So che mi aiuterai.”

“I know that you will help me.”

Androclo sollevò la zampa da terra e vide che era una spina lunga e acuminata a far soffrire così tanto il leone. Prese l’estremità della spina tra le dita; poi diede uno strattone forte e rapido, ed essa venne fuori. Il leone era pieno di gioia.

Androclus lifted the paw from the ground, and saw that it was a long, sharp thorn which hurt the lion so much. He took the end of the thorn in his fingers; then he gave a strong, quick pull, and out it came. The lion was full of joy.

Saltellava come un cane e leccava le mani e i piedi del suo nuovo amico.

He jumped about like a dog, and licked the hands and feet of his new friend.

Androclo non ebbe più alcuna paura dopo questo; e quando venne la notte, lui e il leone si sdraiarono e dormirono fianco a fianco.

Androclus was not at all afraid after this; and when night came, he and the lion lay down and slept side by side.

Per molto tempo, il leone portò cibo ad Androclo ogni giorno; e i due divennero così buoni amici che Androclo trovò la sua nuova vita molto felice.

For a long time, the lion brought food to Androclus every day; and the two became such good friends, that Androclus found his new life a very happy one.

Un giorno alcuni soldati che passavano per il bosco trovarono Androclo nella grotta. Sapevano chi fosse, così lo riportarono a Roma.

One day some soldiers who were passing through the wood found Androclus in the cave. They knew who he was, and so took him back to Rome.

Era legge a quel tempo che ogni schiavo che scappava dal proprio padrone dovesse essere costretto a combattere contro un leone affamato. Così un leone feroce fu rinchiuso per un po’ senza cibo e fu fissato un momento per il combattimento.

It was the law at that time that every slave who ran away from his master should be made to fight a hungry lion. So a fierce lion was shut up for a while without food, and a time was set for the fight.

Quando arrivò il giorno, migliaia di persone si accalcarono per vedere lo spettacolo. A quel tempo andavano in posti simili proprio come oggi la gente va a vedere uno spettacolo circense o una partita di baseball.

When the day came, thousands of people crowded to see the sport. They went to such places at that time very much as people now-a-days go to see a circus show or a game of base-ball.

La porta si aprì e il povero Androclo fu fatto entrare. Era quasi morto di paura, perché i ruggiti del leone si potevano già sentire. Alzò lo sguardo e vide che non c’era pietà nelle migliaia di volti intorno a lui.

The door opened, and poor Androclus was brought in. He was almost dead with fear, for the roars of the lion could already be heard. He looked up, and saw that there was no pity in the thousands of faces around him.
