La bella durmiente

Había una vez un rey y una reina que reinaban en un país muy lejano, donde en aquellos días había hadas.

A king and queen once upon a time reigned in a country a great way off, where there were in those days fairies.

Ahora bien, este rey y esta reina tenían mucho dinero, y mucha ropa fina que ponerse, y muchas cosas buenas que comer y beber, y un carruaje en el que pasear todos los días; pero aunque llevaban casados muchos años, no tenían hijos, y esto les apenaba mucho.

Now this king and queen had plenty of money, and plenty of fine clothes to wear, and plenty of good things to eat and drink, and a coach to ride out in every day: but though they had been married many years they had no children, and this grieved them very much indeed.

Pero un día, mientras la reina paseaba por la orilla del río, al fondo del jardín, vio un pobre pececito que se había arrojado fuera del agua y yacía boqueando y casi muerto en la orilla.

But one day as the queen was walking by the side of the river, at the bottom of the garden, she saw a poor little fish, that had thrown itself out of the water, and lay gasping and nearly dead on the bank.

Entonces la reina se apiadó del pececito y lo devolvió al río; y antes de alejarse nadando, el pez sacó la cabeza del agua y dijo: «Sé cuál es tu deseo y se cumplirá, en recompensa por tu bondad hacia mí; pronto tendrás una hija».

Then the queen took pity on the little fish, and threw it back again into the river; and before it swam away it lifted its head out of the water and said, ‘I know what your wish is, and it shall be fulfilled, in return for your kindness to me--you will soon have a daughter.’

Lo que el pececito había predicho pronto se cumplió; y la reina tuvo una niña, tan hermosa que el rey no podía dejar de mirarla de alegría, y dijo que celebraría un gran banquete, se divertiría y mostraría a la niña a todo el país.

What the little fish had foretold soon came to pass; and the queen had a little girl, so very beautiful that the king could not cease looking on it for joy, and said he would hold a great feast and make merry, and show the child to all the land.

Así que invitó a sus parientes, nobles, amigos y vecinos. Pero la reina dijo: «Invitaré también a las hadas, para que sean amables y buenas con nuestra hijita».

So he asked his kinsmen, and nobles, and friends, and neighbours. But the queen said, ‘I will have the fairies also, that they might be kind and good to our little daughter.’

Resulta que había trece hadas en el reino; pero como el rey y la reina solo tenían doce platos de oro para que comieran, se vieron obligados a dejar a una de las hadas sin invitar.

Now there were thirteen fairies in the kingdom; but as the king and queen had only twelve golden dishes for them to eat out of, they were forced to leave one of the fairies without asking her.

Así que vinieron doce hadas, cada una con un alto gorro rojo en la cabeza, zapatos rojos de tacón alto en los pies y una larga varita blanca en la mano; y cuando terminó el banquete, se reunieron en círculo y dieron todos sus mejores dones a la pequeña princesa.

So twelve fairies came, each with a high red cap on her head, and red shoes with high heels on her feet, and a long white wand in her hand: and after the feast was over they gathered round in a ring and gave all their best gifts to the little princess.

Una le dio bondad, otra belleza, otra riquezas, y así sucesivamente hasta que tuvo todo lo bueno que había en el mundo.

One gave her goodness, another beauty, another riches, and so on till she had all that was good in the world.

Justo cuando once de ellas habían terminado de bendecirla, se oyó un gran ruido en el patio y se anunció que había llegado la decimotercera hada, con un gorro negro en la cabeza, zapatos negros en los pies y una escoba en la mano; y enseguida subió al comedor.

Just as eleven of them had done blessing her, a great noise was heard in the courtyard, and word was brought that the thirteenth fairy was come, with a black cap on her head, and black shoes on her feet, and a broomstick in her hand: and presently up she came into the dining-hall.

Como no la habían invitado al banquete, estaba muy enfadada, regañó mucho al rey y a la reina y se puso manos a la obra para vengarse.

Now, as she had not been asked to the feast she was very angry, and scolded the king and queen very much, and set to work to take her revenge.
