Rosaspina

C’era una volta un re e una regina che regnavano in un paese molto lontano, dove a quei tempi esistevano ancora le fate.

A king and queen once upon a time reigned in a country a great way off, where there were in those days fairies.

Ora, questo re e questa regina avevano abbondanza di denaro, bei vestiti da indossare, ottime cose da mangiare e da bere, e una carrozza su cui uscire ogni giorno: ma, sebbene fossero sposati da molti anni, non avevano figli, e questo li addolorava profondamente.

Now this king and queen had plenty of money, and plenty of fine clothes to wear, and plenty of good things to eat and drink, and a coach to ride out in every day: but though they had been married many years they had no children, and this grieved them very much indeed.

Ma un giorno, mentre la regina passeggiava lungo la riva del fiume, in fondo al giardino, vide un pesciolino che si era gettato fuori dall’acqua e giaceva boccheggiante e quasi morto sulla riva.

But one day as the queen was walking by the side of the river, at the bottom of the garden, she saw a poor little fish, that had thrown itself out of the water, and lay gasping and nearly dead on the bank.

Allora la regina ebbe pietà del pesciolino e lo gettò di nuovo nel fiume; e prima di nuotare via, esso sollevò la testa dall’acqua e disse: ‘So qual è il tuo desiderio, e sarà esaudito, in cambio della tua gentilezza verso di me: presto avrai una figlia’.

Then the queen took pity on the little fish, and threw it back again into the river; and before it swam away it lifted its head out of the water and said, ‘I know what your wish is, and it shall be fulfilled, in return for your kindness to me--you will soon have a daughter.’

Ciò che il pesciolino aveva predetto si avverò presto; e la regina ebbe una bambina, così bella che il re non riusciva a smettere di guardarla per la gioia, e disse che avrebbe dato un grande banchetto per festeggiare e mostrare la bambina a tutto il paese.

What the little fish had foretold soon came to pass; and the queen had a little girl, so very beautiful that the king could not cease looking on it for joy, and said he would hold a great feast and make merry, and show the child to all the land.

Così invitò i suoi parenti, i nobili, gli amici e i vicini. Ma la regina disse: ‘Inviterò anche le fate, affinché possano essere gentili e buone con la nostra figlioletta’.

So he asked his kinsmen, and nobles, and friends, and neighbours. But the queen said, ‘I will have the fairies also, that they might be kind and good to our little daughter.’

Ora, nel regno c’erano tredici fate; ma poiché il re e la regina avevano solo dodici piatti d’oro da cui farle mangiare, furono costretti a lasciarne fuori una senza invitarla.

Now there were thirteen fairies in the kingdom; but as the king and queen had only twelve golden dishes for them to eat out of, they were forced to leave one of the fairies without asking her.

Così arrivarono dodici fate, ognuna con un alto cappello rosso in testa, scarpe rosse con i tacchi alti ai piedi e una lunga bacchetta bianca in mano: e dopo che il banchetto fu finito, si riunirono in cerchio e offrirono tutti i loro doni migliori alla piccola principessa.

So twelve fairies came, each with a high red cap on her head, and red shoes with high heels on her feet, and a long white wand in her hand: and after the feast was over they gathered round in a ring and gave all their best gifts to the little princess.

Una le diede la bontà, un’altra la bellezza, un’altra le ricchezze, e così via, finché ebbe tutto ciò che c’era di buono al mondo.

One gave her goodness, another beauty, another riches, and so on till she had all that was good in the world.

Proprio mentre undici di loro avevano finito di benedirla, si udì un gran rumore nel cortile e fu annunciato che era arrivata la tredicesima fata, con un cappello nero in testa, scarpe nere ai piedi e un manico di scopa in mano: e subito salì nella sala da pranzo.

Just as eleven of them had done blessing her, a great noise was heard in the courtyard, and word was brought that the thirteenth fairy was come, with a black cap on her head, and black shoes on her feet, and a broomstick in her hand: and presently up she came into the dining-hall.

Ora, poiché non era stata invitata al banchetto, era molto arrabbiata, sgridò aspramente il re e la regina e si mise all’opera per vendicarsi.

Now, as she had not been asked to the feast she was very angry, and scolded the king and queen very much, and set to work to take her revenge.
