Damon et Pythias

Un jeune homme nommé Pythias avait commis un acte qui déplut au tyran Denys. Pour cette offense, il fut traîné en prison, et un jour fut fixé pour son exécution.

A young man whose name was Pythias had done something which the tyrant Dionysius did not like. For this offense he was dragged to prison, and a day was set when he should be put to death.

Son foyer était lointain, et il désirait ardemment revoir son père, sa mère et ses amis avant de mourir.

His home was far away, and he wanted very much to see his father and mother and friends before he died.

« Accordez-moi seulement la permission de rentrer chez moi pour dire adieu à ceux que j’aime, dit-il, et je reviendrai ensuite pour offrir ma vie. »

“Only give me leave to go home and say good-by to those whom I love,” he said, “and then I will come back and give up my life.”

Le tyran se moqua de lui.

The tyrant laughed at him.

« Comment puis-je savoir que tu tiendras ta promesse ? dit-il. Tu veux seulement me tromper et te sauver toi-même. »

“How can I know that you will keep your promise?” he said. “You only want to cheat me, and save yourself.”

Alors un jeune homme nommé Damon prit la parole et dit :

Then a young man whose name was Damon spoke and said,--

« Ô roi ! Mettez-moi en prison à la place de mon ami Pythias, et laissez-le retourner dans son pays pour régler ses affaires et faire ses adieux à ses amis. Je sais qu’il reviendra comme il l’a promis, car c’est un homme qui n’a jamais manqué à sa parole.

“O king! put me in prison in place of my friend Pythias, and let him go to his own country to put his affairs in order, and to bid his friends farewell. I know that he will come back as he promised, for he is a man who has never broken his word.

Mais s’il n’est pas ici au jour que vous avez fixé, alors je mourrai à sa place. »

But if he is not here on the day which you have set, then I will die in his stead.”

Le tyran fut surpris que quiconque puisse faire une telle offre. Il finit par accepter de laisser partir Pythias et donna l’ordre d’enfermer le jeune Damon en prison.

The tyrant was surprised that anybody should make such an offer. He at last agreed to let Pythias go, and gave orders that the young man Damon should be shut up in prison.

Le temps passa, et peu à peu le jour fixé pour la mort de Pythias approcha ; et il n’était pas revenu. Le tyran ordonna au geôlier de surveiller Damon de près et de ne pas le laisser s’échapper. Mais Damon n’essaya pas de s’enfuir.

Time passed, and by and by the day drew near which had been set for Pythias to die; and he had not come back. The tyrant ordered the jailer to keep close watch upon Damon, and not let him escape. But Damon did not try to escape.

Il gardait foi en la vérité et l’honneur de son ami. Il dit : « Si Pythias ne revient pas à temps, ce ne sera pas de sa faute. Ce sera parce qu’il en aura été empêché contre son gré. »

He still had faith in the truth and honor of his friend. He said, “If Pythias does not come back in time, it will not be his fault. It will be because he is hindered against his will.”

Enfin le jour arriva, puis l’heure fatidique. Damon était prêt à mourir. Sa confiance en son ami était aussi inébranlable que jamais ; et il déclara qu’il ne regrettait pas d’avoir à souffrir pour quelqu’un qu’il aimait tant.

At last the day came, and then the very hour. Damon was ready to die. His trust in his friend was as firm as ever; and he said that he did not grieve at having to suffer for one whom he loved so much.

Le geôlier vint alors pour le conduire à la mort ; mais au même instant, Pythias apparut sur le seuil. Il avait été retardé par des tempêtes et un naufrage, et il avait craint d’arriver trop tard.

Then the jailer came to lead him to his death; but at the same moment Pythias stood in the door. He had been delayed by storms and shipwreck, and he had feared that he was too late.

Il salua Damon avec affection, puis se livra aux mains du geôlier. Il était heureux de penser qu’il était arrivé à temps, même si c’était à la dernière minute.

He greeted Damon kindly, and then gave himself into the hands of the jailer. He was happy because he thought that he had come in time, even though it was at the last moment.
