Damon e Pizia

Un giovane di nome Pizia aveva fatto qualcosa che al tiranno Dionisio non era piaciuto. Per questa offesa fu trascinato in prigione e fu stabilito il giorno in cui sarebbe stato messo a morte.

A young man whose name was Pythias had done something which the tyrant Dionysius did not like. For this offense he was dragged to prison, and a day was set when he should be put to death.

La sua casa era lontana e desiderava ardentemente vedere suo padre, sua madre e i suoi amici prima di morire.

His home was far away, and he wanted very much to see his father and mother and friends before he died.

“Concedimi solo il permesso di tornare a casa e salutare coloro che amo”, disse, “e poi tornerò e darò la mia vita.”

“Only give me leave to go home and say good-by to those whom I love,” he said, “and then I will come back and give up my life.”

Il tiranno rise di lui.

The tyrant laughed at him.

“Come posso sapere che manterrai la tua promessa?” disse. “Vuoi solo ingannarmi e salvare te stesso.”

“How can I know that you will keep your promise?” he said. “You only want to cheat me, and save yourself.”

Allora un giovane di nome Damone parlò e disse:

Then a young man whose name was Damon spoke and said,--

“O re! Mettimi in prigione al posto del mio amico Pizia e lascia che vada nel suo paese per mettere in ordine i suoi affari e per dire addio ai suoi amici. So che tornerà come ha promesso, perché è un uomo che non ha mai infranto la sua parola.

“O king! put me in prison in place of my friend Pythias, and let him go to his own country to put his affairs in order, and to bid his friends farewell. I know that he will come back as he promised, for he is a man who has never broken his word.

Ma se non sarà qui nel giorno che hai stabilito, allora morirò al suo posto.”

But if he is not here on the day which you have set, then I will die in his stead.”

Il tiranno fu sorpreso che qualcuno potesse fare una tale offerta. Alla fine accettò di lasciare andare Pizia e diede ordine che il giovane Damone fosse rinchiuso in prigione.

The tyrant was surprised that anybody should make such an offer. He at last agreed to let Pythias go, and gave orders that the young man Damon should be shut up in prison.

Il tempo passò e, a poco a poco, si avvicinò il giorno stabilito per la morte di Pizia; ed egli non era tornato. Il tiranno ordinò al carceriere di sorvegliare attentamente Damone e di non lasciarlo scappare. Ma Damone non cercò di scappare.

Time passed, and by and by the day drew near which had been set for Pythias to die; and he had not come back. The tyrant ordered the jailer to keep close watch upon Damon, and not let him escape. But Damon did not try to escape.

Aveva ancora fede nella verità e nell’onore del suo amico. Disse: “Se Pizia non torna in tempo, non sarà colpa sua. Sarà perché è stato ostacolato contro la sua volontà.”

He still had faith in the truth and honor of his friend. He said, “If Pythias does not come back in time, it will not be his fault. It will be because he is hindered against his will.”

Alla fine arrivò il giorno, e poi l’ora fatidica. Damone era pronto a morire. La sua fiducia nel suo amico era ferma come sempre; e disse che non si rammaricava di dover soffrire per qualcuno che amava così tanto.

At last the day came, and then the very hour. Damon was ready to die. His trust in his friend was as firm as ever; and he said that he did not grieve at having to suffer for one whom he loved so much.

Poi il carceriere venne a condurlo alla morte; ma nello stesso momento Pizia apparve sulla porta. Era stato ritardato da tempeste e naufragi, e aveva temuto di essere arrivato troppo tardi.

Then the jailer came to lead him to his death; but at the same moment Pythias stood in the door. He had been delayed by storms and shipwreck, and he had feared that he was too late.

Salutò Damone con affetto e poi si consegnò nelle mani del carceriere. Era felice perché pensava di essere arrivato in tempo, anche se all’ultimo momento.

He greeted Damon kindly, and then gave himself into the hands of the jailer. He was happy because he thought that he had come in time, even though it was at the last moment.
