Horacio en el puente

Hubo una vez una guerra entre el pueblo romano y los etruscos que vivían en las ciudades al otro lado del río Tíber. Porsena, el rey de los etruscos, reunió un gran ejército y marchó hacia Roma. La ciudad nunca había estado en tan gran peligro.

Once there was a war between the Roman people and the Etruscans who lived in the towns on the other side of the Tiber River. Porsena, the King of the Etruscans, raised a great army, and marched toward Rome. The city had never been in so great danger.

Los romanos no tenían muchos hombres de combate en aquel entonces, y sabían que no eran lo suficientemente fuertes para enfrentarse a los etruscos en campo abierto. Así que se mantuvieron dentro de sus murallas y pusieron guardias para vigilar los caminos.

The Romans did not have very many fighting men at that time, and they knew that they were not strong enough to meet the Etruscans in open battle. So they kept themselves inside of their walls, and set guards to watch the roads.

Una mañana, el ejército de Porsena fue visto viniendo por las colinas desde el norte. Había miles de jinetes e infantes, y marchaban directamente hacia el puente de madera que cruzaba el río en Roma.

One morning the army of Porsena was seen coming over the hills from the north. There were thousands of horsemen and footmen, and they were marching straight toward the wooden bridge which spanned the river at Rome.

“¿Qué haremos?”, dijeron los Padres de cabellos blancos que dictaban las leyes para el pueblo romano. “Si logran tomar el puente, no podremos impedir que crucen; ¿y qué esperanza quedará entonces para la ciudad?”

“What shall we do?” said the white-haired Fathers who made the laws for the Roman people. “If they once gain the bridge, we cannot hinder them from crossing; and then what hope will there be for the town?”

Ahora bien, entre los guardias del puente había un hombre valiente llamado Horacio. Él estaba en el lado más alejado del río y, al ver que los etruscos estaban tan cerca, llamó a los romanos que estaban detrás de él.

Now, among the guards at the bridge, there was a brave man named Horatius. He was on the farther side of the river, and when he saw that the Etruscans were so near, he called out to the Romans who were behind him.

“¡Derribad el puente con toda la rapidez que podáis!”, gritó. “Yo, con los dos hombres que están a mi lado, mantendré al enemigo a raya.”

“Hew down the bridge with all the speed that you can!” he cried. “I, with the two men who stand by me, will keep the foe at bay.”

Entonces, con sus escudos por delante y sus largas lanzas en las manos, los tres valientes hombres se pararon en el camino y contuvieron a los jinetes que Porsena había enviado para tomar el puente.

Then, with their shields before them, and their long spears in their hands, the three brave men stood in the road, and kept back the horsemen whom Porsena had sent to take the bridge.

Sobre el puente, los romanos cortaban las vigas y los postes. Sus hachas resonaban, las astillas volaban rápido; y pronto tembló y estuvo a punto de caer.

On the bridge the Romans hewed away at the beams and posts. Their axes rang, the chips flew fast; and soon it trembled, and was ready to fall.

“¡Volved! ¡Volved y salvad vuestras vidas!”, gritaron a Horacio y a los dos que estaban con él.

“Come back! come back, and save your lives!” they cried to Horatius and the two who were with him.

Pero justo en ese momento, los jinetes de Porsena se lanzaron hacia ellos de nuevo.

But just then Porsena’s horsemen dashed toward them again.

“¡Corred por vuestras vidas!”, dijo Horacio a sus amigos. “Yo mantendré el camino.”

“Run for your lives!” said Horatius to his friends. “I will keep the road.”

Ellos se dieron la vuelta y corrieron de regreso a través del puente. Apenas habían llegado al otro lado cuando hubo un estruendo de vigas y maderas. El puente se tambaleó hacia un lado y luego cayó con un gran chapoteo al agua.

They turned, and ran back across the bridge. They had hardly reached the other side when there was a crashing of beams and timbers. The bridge toppled over to one side, and then fell with a great splash into the water.

Cuando Horacio escuchó el sonido, supo que la ciudad estaba a salvo. Con el rostro aún hacia los hombres de Porsena, retrocedió lentamente hasta que estuvo en la orilla del río.

When Horatius heard the sound, he knew that the city was safe. With his face still toward Porsena’s men, he moved slowly backward till he stood on the river’s bank.

Un dardo lanzado por uno de los soldados de Porsena le sacó el ojo izquierdo; pero él no flaqueó. Lanzó su lanza al jinete que iba al frente y luego se giró rápidamente.

A dart thrown by one of Porsena’s soldiers put out his left eye; but he did not falter. He cast his spear at the foremost horseman, and then he turned quickly around.
