Orazio al ponte

C’era una volta una guerra tra il popolo romano e gli Etruschi che vivevano nelle città dall’altra parte del fiume Tevere. Porsenna, il re degli Etruschi, radunò un grande esercito e marciò verso Roma. La città non era mai stata in un pericolo così grande.

Once there was a war between the Roman people and the Etruscans who lived in the towns on the other side of the Tiber River. Porsena, the King of the Etruscans, raised a great army, and marched toward Rome. The city had never been in so great danger.

I Romani non avevano molti uomini combattenti a quel tempo, e sapevano di non essere abbastanza forti da affrontare gli Etruschi in una battaglia campale. Così si tennero all’interno delle loro mura e misero delle guardie a sorvegliare le strade.

The Romans did not have very many fighting men at that time, and they knew that they were not strong enough to meet the Etruscans in open battle. So they kept themselves inside of their walls, and set guards to watch the roads.

Una mattina l’esercito di Porsenna fu visto arrivare dalle colline da nord. C’erano migliaia di cavalieri e fanti, e marciavano dritti verso il ponte di legno che attraversava il fiume a Roma.

One morning the army of Porsena was seen coming over the hills from the north. There were thousands of horsemen and footmen, and they were marching straight toward the wooden bridge which spanned the river at Rome.

“Cosa dobbiamo fare?” dissero i Padri dai capelli bianchi che facevano le leggi per il popolo romano. “Se riescono a conquistare il ponte, non potremo impedire loro di attraversarlo; e allora quale speranza rimarrà per la città?”

“What shall we do?” said the white-haired Fathers who made the laws for the Roman people. “If they once gain the bridge, we cannot hinder them from crossing; and then what hope will there be for the town?”

Ora, tra le guardie al ponte, c’era un uomo coraggioso di nome Orazio. Si trovava sulla sponda più lontana del fiume e, quando vide che gli Etruschi erano così vicini, chiamò i Romani che erano dietro di lui.

Now, among the guards at the bridge, there was a brave man named Horatius. He was on the farther side of the river, and when he saw that the Etruscans were so near, he called out to the Romans who were behind him.

“Abbattete il ponte con tutta la velocità che potete!” gridò. “Io, con i due uomini che sono al mio fianco, terrò a bada il nemico.”

“Hew down the bridge with all the speed that you can!” he cried. “I, with the two men who stand by me, will keep the foe at bay.”

Poi, con gli scudi davanti a sé e le lunghe lance in mano, i tre uomini coraggiosi si misero sulla strada e respinsero i cavalieri che Porsenna aveva mandato a prendere il ponte.

Then, with their shields before them, and their long spears in their hands, the three brave men stood in the road, and kept back the horsemen whom Porsena had sent to take the bridge.

Sul ponte i Romani tagliavano travi e pali. Le loro asce risuonavano, le schegge volavano veloci; e presto tremò, ed era pronto a crollare.

On the bridge the Romans hewed away at the beams and posts. Their axes rang, the chips flew fast; and soon it trembled, and was ready to fall.

“Tornate indietro! Tornate indietro e salvate le vostre vite!” gridarono a Orazio e ai due che erano con lui.

“Come back! come back, and save your lives!” they cried to Horatius and the two who were with him.

Ma proprio in quel momento i cavalieri di Porsenna si scagliarono di nuovo contro di loro.

But just then Porsena’s horsemen dashed toward them again.

“Correte per salvarvi la vita!” disse Orazio ai suoi amici. “Terrò io la strada.”

“Run for your lives!” said Horatius to his friends. “I will keep the road.”

Si voltarono e corsero indietro attraverso il ponte. Avevano appena raggiunto l’altra sponda quando si udì uno schianto di travi e legname. Il ponte si inclinò da un lato e poi cadde con un grande tonfo nell’acqua.

They turned, and ran back across the bridge. They had hardly reached the other side when there was a crashing of beams and timbers. The bridge toppled over to one side, and then fell with a great splash into the water.

Quando Orazio udì il rumore, seppe che la città era salva. Con il volto ancora rivolto verso gli uomini di Porsenna, si mosse lentamente all’indietro finché non si ritrovò sulla riva del fiume.

When Horatius heard the sound, he knew that the city was safe. With his face still toward Porsena’s men, he moved slowly backward till he stood on the river’s bank.

Un dardo scagliato da uno dei soldati di Porsenna gli spense l’occhio sinistro; ma egli non vacillò. Scagliò la sua lancia contro il cavaliere più vicino e poi si voltò rapidamente.

A dart thrown by one of Porsena’s soldiers put out his left eye; but he did not falter. He cast his spear at the foremost horseman, and then he turned quickly around.
