Jack et le Haricot magique

Il était une fois une pauvre veuve qui avait un fils unique nommé Jack et une vache nommée Blanche-Lait. Tout ce qu’ils avaient pour vivre, c’était le lait que la vache donnait chaque matin, qu’ils portaient au marché pour le vendre.

There was once upon a time a poor widow who had an only son named Jack, and a cow named Milky-white. And all they had to live on was the milk the cow gave every morning which they carried to the market and sold.

Mais un matin, Blanche-Lait ne donna pas de lait et ils ne surent que faire.

But one morning Milky-white gave no milk and they didn’t know what to do.

« Que allons-nous faire, que allons-nous faire ? » dit la veuve en se tordant les mains.

“What shall we do, what shall we do?” said the widow, wringing her hands.

« Ne t’en fais pas, maman, je vais aller chercher du travail quelque part », dit Jack.

“Cheer up, mother, I’ll go and get work somewhere,” said Jack.

« Nous avons déjà essayé cela, et personne ne voudrait de toi », dit sa mère ; « nous devons vendre Blanche-Lait et faire quelque chose avec l’argent, ouvrir une boutique ou autre chose. »

“We’ve tried that before, and nobody would take you,” said his mother; “we must sell Milky-white and with the money do something, start shop, or something.”

« Très bien, maman », dit Jack ; « c’est jour de marché aujourd’hui, je vais bientôt vendre Blanche-Lait, et ensuite nous verrons ce que nous pourrons faire. »

“All right, mother,” says Jack; “it’s market-day today, and I’ll soon sell Milky-white, and then we’ll see what we can do.”

Il prit donc le licou de la vache à la main et se mit en route. Il n’était pas allé bien loin quand il rencontra un vieil homme à l’air étrange qui lui dit : « Bonjour, Jack. »

So he took the cow’s halter in his hand, and off he starts. He hadn’t gone far when he met a funny-looking old man who said to him: “Good morning, Jack.”

« Bonjour à vous », dit Jack, en se demandant comment il connaissait son nom.

“Good morning to you,” said Jack, and wondered how he knew his name.

« Eh bien, Jack, où vas-tu comme ça ? » dit l’homme.

“Well, Jack, and where are you off to?” said the man.

« Je vais au marché pour vendre notre vache ici. »

“I’m going to market to sell our cow here.”

« Oh, tu as l’air d’être le genre de gars qu’il faut pour vendre des vaches », dit l’homme ; « je me demande si tu sais combien de haricots font cinq. »

“Oh, you look the proper sort of chap to sell cows,” said the man; “I wonder if you know how many beans make five.”

« Deux dans chaque main et un dans la bouche », dit Jack, aussi vif qu’une aiguille.

“Two in each hand and one in your mouth,” says Jack, as sharp as a needle.

« Tu as raison », dit l’homme, « et les voici, ce sont ces haricots-là », continua-t-il en sortant de sa poche un certain nombre de haricots à l’aspect étrange. « Comme tu es si vif », dit-il, « ça ne me dérange pas de faire un échange avec toi : ta vache contre ces haricots. »

“Right you are,” said the man, “and here they are the very beans themselves,” he went on pulling out of his pocket a number of strange-looking beans. “As you are so sharp,” says he, “I don’t mind doing a swop with you--your cow for these beans.”

« Tu parles ! » dit Jack ; « tu aimerais bien, n’est-ce pas ? »

“Walker!” says Jack; “wouldn’t you like it?”
