Die Glocke von Atri

Atri ist der Name einer kleinen Stadt in Italien. Es ist eine sehr alte Stadt, die auf halber Höhe eines steilen Hügels erbaut wurde.

Atri is the name of a little town in Italy. It is a very old town, and is built half-way up the side of a steep hill.

Vor langer Zeit kaufte der König von Atri eine schöne, große Glocke und ließ sie in einem Turm auf dem Marktplatz aufhängen. Ein langes Seil, das fast bis zum Boden reichte, wurde an der Glocke befestigt. Das kleinste Kind konnte die Glocke läuten, indem es an diesem Seil zog.

A long time ago, the King of Atri bought a fine large bell, and had it hung up in a tower in the market place. A long rope that reached almost to the ground was fastened to the bell. The smallest child could ring the bell by pulling upon this rope.

“Es ist die Glocke der Gerechtigkeit”, sagte der König.

“It is the bell of justice,” said the king.

Als schließlich alles bereit war, feierten die Einwohner von Atri ein großes Fest. Alle Männer, Frauen und Kinder kamen auf den Marktplatz, um die Glocke der Gerechtigkeit zu sehen.

When at last everything was ready, the people of Atri had a great holiday. All the men and women and children came down to the market place to look at the bell of justice.

Es war eine sehr hübsche Glocke, die so lange poliert wurde, bis sie fast so hell und golden wie die Sonne glänzte.

It was a very pretty bell, and was, polished until it looked almost as bright and yellow as the sun.

“Wie gerne würden wir sie läuten hören!”, sagten sie.

“How we should like to hear it ring!” they said.

Dann kam der König die Straße herab.

Then the king came down the street.

“Vielleicht läutet er sie”, sagten die Leute; und jeder blieb ganz still stehen und wartete darauf, was er tun würde.

“Perhaps he will ring it,” said the people; and everybody stood very still, and waited to see what he would do.

Aber er läutete die Glocke nicht. Er nahm nicht einmal das Seil in die Hand. Als er am Fuß des Turms ankam, blieb er stehen und hob die Hand.

But he did not ring the bell. He did not even take the rope in his hands. When he came to the foot of the tower, he stopped, and raised his hand.

“Mein Volk”, sagte er, “seht ihr diese wunderschöne Glocke? Es ist eure Glocke; aber sie darf nur im Notfall geläutet werden.

“My people,” he said, “do you see this beautiful bell? It is your bell; but it must never be rung except in case of need.

Wenn jemand von euch jemals Unrecht erfährt, darf er kommen und die Glocke läuten; dann sollen die Richter sofort zusammenkommen, seinen Fall anhören und ihm Gerechtigkeit widerfahren lassen.

If any one of you is wronged at any time, he may come and ring the bell; and then the judges shall come together at once, and hear his case, and give him justice.

Reich und arm, alt und jung, alle dürfen gleichermaßen kommen; aber niemand darf das Seil berühren, es sei denn, er weiß, dass ihm Unrecht getan wurde.”

Rich and poor, old and young, all alike may come; but no one must touch the rope unless he knows that he has been wronged.”

Viele Jahre vergingen danach. Oft läutete die Glocke auf dem Marktplatz, um die Richter zusammenzurufen. Viele Ungerechtigkeiten wurden wiedergutgemacht, viele Übeltäter bestraft. Schließlich war das Hanfseil fast abgenutzt.

Many years passed by after this. Many times did the bell in the market place ring out to call the judges together. Many wrongs were righted, many ill-doers were punished. At last the hempen rope was almost worn out.

Der untere Teil war aufgedreht; einige der Stränge waren gerissen; es wurde so kurz, dass nur ein großer Mann es erreichen konnte.

The lower part of it was untwisted; some of the strands were broken; it became so short that only a tall man could reach it.
