La campana di Atri

Atri è il nome di una piccola città in Italia. È una città molto antica, costruita a metà del fianco di una ripida collina.

Atri is the name of a little town in Italy. It is a very old town, and is built half-way up the side of a steep hill.

Molto tempo fa, il Re di Atri comprò una bella campana grande e la fece appendere in una torre nella piazza del mercato. Una lunga corda che arrivava quasi fino a terra fu fissata alla campana. Il bambino più piccolo poteva suonare la campana tirando questa corda.

A long time ago, the King of Atri bought a fine large bell, and had it hung up in a tower in the market place. A long rope that reached almost to the ground was fastened to the bell. The smallest child could ring the bell by pulling upon this rope.

“È la campana della giustizia”, disse il re.

“It is the bell of justice,” said the king.

Quando finalmente tutto fu pronto, gli abitanti di Atri fecero una grande festa. Tutti gli uomini, le donne e i bambini scesero nella piazza del mercato per guardare la campana della giustizia.

When at last everything was ready, the people of Atri had a great holiday. All the men and women and children came down to the market place to look at the bell of justice.

Era una campana molto bella, ed era stata lucidata finché non sembrò quasi luminosa e gialla come il sole.

It was a very pretty bell, and was, polished until it looked almost as bright and yellow as the sun.

“Come ci piacerebbe sentirla suonare!”, dissero.

“How we should like to hear it ring!” they said.

Poi il re scese lungo la strada.

Then the king came down the street.

“Forse la suonerà lui”, dissero le persone; e tutti rimasero molto immobili, in attesa di vedere cosa avrebbe fatto.

“Perhaps he will ring it,” said the people; and everybody stood very still, and waited to see what he would do.

Ma lui non suonò la campana. Non prese nemmeno la corda tra le mani. Quando arrivò ai piedi della torre, si fermò e alzò la mano.

But he did not ring the bell. He did not even take the rope in his hands. When he came to the foot of the tower, he stopped, and raised his hand.

“Gente mia”, disse, “vedete questa bellissima campana? È la vostra campana; ma non deve mai essere suonata se non in caso di necessità.

“My people,” he said, “do you see this beautiful bell? It is your bell; but it must never be rung except in case of need.

Se qualcuno di voi subisce un torto in qualsiasi momento, può venire a suonare la campana; e allora i giudici si riuniranno immediatamente, ascolteranno il suo caso e gli renderanno giustizia.

If any one of you is wronged at any time, he may come and ring the bell; and then the judges shall come together at once, and hear his case, and give him justice.

Ricchi e poveri, vecchi e giovani, tutti allo stesso modo possono venire; ma nessuno deve toccare la corda a meno che non sappia di aver subito un torto.”

Rich and poor, old and young, all alike may come; but no one must touch the rope unless he knows that he has been wronged.”

Molti anni passarono dopo questo. Molte volte la campana nella piazza del mercato suonò per chiamare i giudici a raccolta. Molti torti furono riparati, molti malfattori furono puniti. Alla fine la corda di canapa era quasi consumata.

Many years passed by after this. Many times did the bell in the market place ring out to call the judges together. Many wrongs were righted, many ill-doers were punished. At last the hempen rope was almost worn out.

La parte inferiore era sfilacciata; alcuni dei fili erano spezzati; divenne così corta che solo un uomo alto poteva raggiungerla.

The lower part of it was untwisted; some of the strands were broken; it became so short that only a tall man could reach it.
