La campana de Atri

Atri es el nombre de un pequeño pueblo en Italia. Es un pueblo muy antiguo, construido a mitad de la ladera de una colina escarpada.

Atri is the name of a little town in Italy. It is a very old town, and is built half-way up the side of a steep hill.

Hace mucho tiempo, el Rey de Atri compró una campana grande y hermosa, y la hizo colgar en una torre en la plaza del mercado. Una cuerda larga que llegaba casi hasta el suelo estaba atada a la campana. El niño más pequeño podía hacer sonar la campana tirando de esta cuerda.

A long time ago, the King of Atri bought a fine large bell, and had it hung up in a tower in the market place. A long rope that reached almost to the ground was fastened to the bell. The smallest child could ring the bell by pulling upon this rope.

“Es la campana de la justicia”, dijo el rey.

“It is the bell of justice,” said the king.

Cuando por fin todo estuvo listo, la gente de Atri tuvo un gran día de fiesta. Todos los hombres, mujeres y niños bajaron a la plaza del mercado para ver la campana de la justicia.

When at last everything was ready, the people of Atri had a great holiday. All the men and women and children came down to the market place to look at the bell of justice.

Era una campana muy bonita, y estaba pulida hasta que parecía casi tan brillante y amarilla como el sol.

It was a very pretty bell, and was, polished until it looked almost as bright and yellow as the sun.

“¡Cómo nos gustaría oírla sonar!”, dijeron.

“How we should like to hear it ring!” they said.

Entonces el rey bajó por la calle.

Then the king came down the street.

“Quizás él la haga sonar”, dijo la gente; y todos se quedaron muy quietos, esperando a ver qué haría.

“Perhaps he will ring it,” said the people; and everybody stood very still, and waited to see what he would do.

Pero él no hizo sonar la campana. Ni siquiera tomó la cuerda en sus manos. Cuando llegó al pie de la torre, se detuvo y levantó la mano.

But he did not ring the bell. He did not even take the rope in his hands. When he came to the foot of the tower, he stopped, and raised his hand.

“Pueblo mío”, dijo, “¿ven esta hermosa campana? Es su campana; pero nunca debe ser tocada excepto en caso de necesidad.

“My people,” he said, “do you see this beautiful bell? It is your bell; but it must never be rung except in case of need.

Si alguno de ustedes es agraviado en cualquier momento, puede venir y hacer sonar la campana; y entonces los jueces se reunirán de inmediato, escucharán su caso y le harán justicia.

If any one of you is wronged at any time, he may come and ring the bell; and then the judges shall come together at once, and hear his case, and give him justice.

Ricos y pobres, viejos y jóvenes, todos por igual pueden venir; pero nadie debe tocar la cuerda a menos que sepa que ha sido agraviado”.

Rich and poor, old and young, all alike may come; but no one must touch the rope unless he knows that he has been wronged.”

Pasaron muchos años después de esto. Muchas veces la campana en la plaza del mercado sonó para reunir a los jueces. Muchos agravios fueron reparados, muchos malhechores fueron castigados. Al final, la cuerda de cáñamo estaba casi desgastada.

Many years passed by after this. Many times did the bell in the market place ring out to call the judges together. Many wrongs were righted, many ill-doers were punished. At last the hempen rope was almost worn out.

The lower part of it was untwisted; some of the strands were broken; it became so short that only a tall man could reach it.
