L'Enfant d'éléphant

Dans les temps très anciens et très lointains, l’Éléphant, ô Bien-Aimé, n’avait pas de trompe. Il n’avait qu’un nez noirâtre et boursouflé, gros comme une botte, qu’il pouvait remuer de gauche à droite ; mais il ne pouvait rien ramasser avec.

In the High and Far-Off Times the Elephant, O Best Beloved, had no trunk. He had only a blackish, bulgy nose, as big as a boot, that he could wriggle about from side to side; but he couldn’t pick up things with it.

Mais il y avait un Éléphant — un nouvel Éléphant — un Enfant d’Éléphant — qui était plein d’une « satiable » curiosité, ce qui signifie qu’il posait énormément de questions. Il vivait en Afrique et il remplissait toute l’Afrique de ses « satiables » curiosités.

But there was one Elephant--a new Elephant--an Elephant’s Child--who was full of ‘satiable curtiosity, and that means he asked ever so many questions. And he lived in Africa, and he filled all Africa with his ‘satiable curtiosities.

Il demanda à sa grande tante, l’Autruche, pourquoi les plumes de sa queue poussaient ainsi, et sa grande tante l’Autruche le fessa avec sa griffe dure, très dure.

He asked his tall aunt, the Ostrich, why her tail-feathers grew just so, and his tall aunt the Ostrich spanked him with her hard, hard claw.

Il demanda à son grand oncle, la Girafe, ce qui rendait sa peau tachetée, et son grand oncle, la Girafe, le fessa avec son sabot dur, très dur. Et pourtant, il était toujours plein de « satiable » curiosité !

He asked his tall uncle, the Giraffe, what made his skin spotty, and his tall uncle, the Giraffe, spanked him with his hard, hard hoof. And still he was full of ‘satiable curtiosity!

Il demanda à sa large tante, l’Hippopotame, pourquoi ses yeux étaient rouges, et sa large tante, l’Hippopotame, le fessa avec son large, très large sabot ; et il demanda à son oncle poilu, le Babouin, pourquoi les melons avaient ce goût-là, et son oncle poilu, le Babouin, le fessa avec sa patte poilue, très poilue.

He asked his broad aunt, the Hippopotamus, why her eyes were red, and his broad aunt, the Hippopotamus, spanked him with her broad, broad hoof; and he asked his hairy uncle, the Baboon, why melons tasted just so, and his hairy uncle, the Baboon, spanked him with his hairy, hairy paw.

Et pourtant, il était toujours plein de « satiable » curiosité ! Il posait des questions sur tout ce qu’il voyait, entendait, sentait, goûtait ou touchait, et tous ses oncles et tantes le fessaient. Et pourtant, il était toujours plein de « satiable » curiosité !

And still he was full of ‘satiable curtiosity! He asked questions about everything that he saw, or heard, or felt, or smelt, or touched, and all his uncles and his aunts spanked him. And still he was full of ‘satiable curtiosity!

Un beau matin, au milieu de la Précession des Équinoxes, cet Enfant d’Éléphant « satiable » posa une nouvelle et belle question qu’il n’avait jamais posée auparavant. Il demanda : « Que mange le Crocodile au dîner ? » Alors tout le monde dit : « Chut ! »

One fine morning in the middle of the Precession of the Equinoxes this ‘satiable Elephant’s Child asked a new fine question that he had never asked before. He asked, ‘What does the Crocodile have for dinner?’ Then everybody said, ‘Hush!’

in a loud and dretful tone, and they spanked him immediately and directly, without stopping, for a long time.

Peu après, quand ce fut terminé, il tomba sur l’Oiseau Kolokolo perché au milieu d’un buisson d’épines, et il dit : « Mon père m’a fessé, et ma mère m’a fessé ; tous mes oncles et tantes m’ont fessé pour ma « satiable » curiosité ; et pourtant, je veux savoir ce que le Crocodile mange au dîner ! »

By and by, when that was finished, he came upon Kolokolo Bird sitting in the middle of a wait-a-bit thorn-bush, and he said, ‘My father has spanked me, and my mother has spanked me; all my aunts and uncles have spanked me for my ‘satiable curtiosity; and still I want to know what the Crocodile has for dinner!’

Alors l’Oiseau Kolokolo dit, avec un cri mélancolique : « Va sur les rives du grand fleuve Limpopo, gris-vert et graisseux, tout entouré d’arbres à fièvre, et tu le découvriras. »

Then Kolokolo Bird said, with a mournful cry, ‘Go to the banks of the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever-trees, and find out.’

Le lendemain matin, alors qu’il ne restait rien des Équinoxes, parce que la Précession avait précédé selon le précédent, cet Enfant d’Éléphant « satiable » prit cent livres de bananes (les petites courtes et rouges), cent livres de canne à sucre (les longues et violettes) et dix-sept melons (les verts et craquants), et dit à toute sa chère famille : « Adieu.

That very next morning, when there was nothing left of the Equinoxes, because the Precession had preceded according to precedent, this ‘satiable Elephant’s Child took a hundred pounds of bananas (the little short red kind), and a hundred pounds of sugar-cane (the long purple kind), and seventeen melons (the greeny-crackly kind), and said to all his dear families, ‘Goodbye.

Je vais au grand fleuve Limpopo, gris-vert et graisseux, tout entouré d’arbres à fièvre, pour découvrir ce que le Crocodile mange au dîner. » Et ils le fessèrent tous une fois de plus pour lui porter chance, bien qu’il leur ait demandé très poliment d’arrêter.

I am going to the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever-trees, to find out what the Crocodile has for dinner.’ And they all spanked him once more for luck, though he asked them most politely to stop.
