L'elefantino

Nei Tempi Alti e Lontani l’Elefante, o Mio Caro, non aveva la proboscide. Aveva solo un naso nerastro e bitorzoluto, grande quanto uno stivale, che poteva dimenare da una parte all’altra; ma non riusciva a raccogliere le cose con esso.

In the High and Far-Off Times the Elephant, O Best Beloved, had no trunk. He had only a blackish, bulgy nose, as big as a boot, that he could wriggle about from side to side; but he couldn’t pick up things with it.

Ma c’era un Elefante--un nuovo Elefante--il Figlio dell’Elefante--che era pieno di ‘saziabile curiosità, e ciò significa che faceva un sacco di domande. E viveva in Africa, e riempiva tutta l’Africa con le sue ‘saziabili curiosità.

But there was one Elephant--a new Elephant--an Elephant’s Child--who was full of ‘satiable curtiosity, and that means he asked ever so many questions. And he lived in Africa, and he filled all Africa with his ‘satiable curtiosities.

Chiese alla sua alta zia, lo Struzzo, perché le piume della sua coda crescessero proprio così, e la sua alta zia lo Struzzo lo sculacciò con il suo duro, durissimo artiglio.

He asked his tall aunt, the Ostrich, why her tail-feathers grew just so, and his tall aunt the Ostrich spanked him with her hard, hard claw.

Chiese al suo alto zio, la Giraffa, cosa rendesse la sua pelle maculata, e il suo alto zio, la Giraffa, lo sculacciò con il suo duro, durissimo zoccolo. E lui era ancora pieno di ‘saziabile curiosità!

He asked his tall uncle, the Giraffe, what made his skin spotty, and his tall uncle, the Giraffe, spanked him with his hard, hard hoof. And still he was full of ‘satiable curtiosity!

Chiese alla sua larga zia, l’Ippopotamo, perché i suoi occhi fossero rossi, e la sua larga zia, l’Ippopotamo, lo sculacciò con il suo largo, larghissimo zoccolo; e chiese al suo peloso zio, il Babbuino, perché i meloni avessero quel sapore, e il suo peloso zio, il Babbuino, lo sculacciò con la sua pelosa, pelosissima zampa.

He asked his broad aunt, the Hippopotamus, why her eyes were red, and his broad aunt, the Hippopotamus, spanked him with her broad, broad hoof; and he asked his hairy uncle, the Baboon, why melons tasted just so, and his hairy uncle, the Baboon, spanked him with his hairy, hairy paw.

E lui era ancora pieno di ‘saziabile curiosità! Faceva domande su tutto ciò che vedeva, o sentiva, o percepiva, o annusava, o toccava, e tutti i suoi zii e le sue zie lo sculacciavano. E lui era ancora pieno di ‘saziabile curiosità!

And still he was full of ‘satiable curtiosity! He asked questions about everything that he saw, or heard, or felt, or smelt, or touched, and all his uncles and his aunts spanked him. And still he was full of ‘satiable curtiosity!

Una bella mattina, nel bel mezzo della Precessione degli Equinozi, questo ‘saziabile Figlio dell’Elefante fece una nuova bella domanda che non aveva mai fatto prima. Chiese: ‘Cosa mangia il Coccodrillo a cena?’ Allora tutti dissero: ‘Zitto!’

One fine morning in the middle of the Precession of the Equinoxes this ‘satiable Elephant’s Child asked a new fine question that he had never asked before. He asked, ‘What does the Crocodile have for dinner?’ Then everybody said, ‘Hush!’

Più tardi, quando fu finito, si imbatté nell’Uccello Kolokolo seduto nel mezzo di un cespuglio di spine, e disse: ‘Mio padre mi ha sculacciato, e mia madre mi ha sculacciato; tutti i miei zii e zie mi hanno sculacciato per la mia ‘saziabile curiosità; eppure voglio ancora sapere cosa mangia il Coccodrillo a cena!’

By and by, when that was finished, he came upon Kolokolo Bird sitting in the middle of a wait-a-bit thorn-bush, and he said, ‘My father has spanked me, and my mother has spanked me; all my aunts and uncles have spanked me for my ‘satiable curtiosity; and still I want to know what the Crocodile has for dinner!’

Allora l’Uccello Kolokolo disse, con un grido lamentoso: ‘Vai sulle rive del grande, grigio-verde, untuoso fiume Limpopo, tutto circondato da alberi della febbre, e scoprilo.’

Then Kolokolo Bird said, with a mournful cry, ‘Go to the banks of the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever-trees, and find out.’

La mattina dopo, quando non rimaneva più nulla degli Equinozi, perché la Precessione aveva preceduto secondo il precedente, questo ‘saziabile Figlio dell’Elefante prese cento libbre di banane (quelle piccole, corte e rosse), e cento libbre di canna da zucchero (quella lunga e viola), e diciassette meloni (quelli verdastri e croccanti), e disse a tutte le sue care famiglie: ‘Addio.

That very next morning, when there was nothing left of the Equinoxes, because the Precession had preceded according to precedent, this ‘satiable Elephant’s Child took a hundred pounds of bananas (the little short red kind), and a hundred pounds of sugar-cane (the long purple kind), and seventeen melons (the greeny-crackly kind), and said to all his dear families, ‘Goodbye.

I am going to the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever-trees, to find out what the Crocodile has for dinner.’ And they all spanked him once more for luck, though he asked them most politely to stop.
