Le rane che chiesero un re

Le rane erano stanche di governarsi da sole.

The Frogs were tired of governing themselves.

Avevano così tanta libertà che ne erano state viziate, e non facevano altro che starsene sedute a gracidare annoiate, desiderando un governo che potesse intrattenerle con lo sfarzo e la pompa della regalità, e che le governasse in modo da far sentire loro di essere governate.

They had so much freedom that it had spoiled them, and they did nothing but sit around croaking in a bored manner and wishing for a government that could entertain them with the pomp and display of royalty, and rule them in a way to make them know they were being ruled.

Niente governi deboli e senza carattere per loro, dichiararono. Così inviarono una petizione a Giove chiedendo un re.

No milk and water government for them, they declared. So they sent a petition to Jupiter asking for a king.

Giove vide quanto fossero creature semplici e sciocche, ma per tenerle buone e far credere loro di avere un re, gettò giù un enorme tronco, che cadde nell’acqua con un gran tonfo.

Jupiter saw what simple and foolish creatures they were, but to keep them quiet and make them think they had a king he threw down a huge log, which fell into the water with a great splash.

Le rane si nascosero tra i giunchi e l’erba, pensando che il nuovo re fosse un gigante spaventoso. Ma presto scoprirono quanto Re Tronco fosse mansueto e pacifico.

The Frogs hid themselves among the reeds and grasses, thinking the new king to be some fearful giant. But they soon discovered how tame and peaceable King Log was.

In poco tempo le rane più giovani lo usavano come trampolino per i tuffi, mentre quelle più anziane ne fecero un luogo di ritrovo, dove si lamentavano ad alta voce con Giove riguardo al governo.

In a short time the younger Frogs were using him for a diving platform, while the older Frogs made him a meeting place, where they complained loudly to Jupiter about the government.

Per dare una lezione alle rane, il sovrano degli dei inviò ora una Gru come re della terra delle rane. La Gru si rivelò un tipo di re molto diverso dal vecchio Re Tronco. Si pappò le povere rane a destra e a manca e presto capirono che sciocche erano state.

To teach the Frogs a lesson the ruler of the gods now sent a Crane to be king of Frogland. The Crane proved to be a very different sort of king from old King Log. He gobbled up the poor Frogs right and left and they soon saw what fools they had been.

Con gracidii lugubri implorarono Giove di portar via il crudele tiranno prima che venissero tutte distrutte.

In mournful croaks they begged Jupiter to take away the cruel tyrant before they should all be destroyed.

“Ebbene!” esclamò Giove “Non siete ancora contente? Avete ciò che avete chiesto e quindi non potete che incolpare voi stesse per le vostre sventure.”

“How now!” cried Jupiter “Are you not yet content? You have what you asked for and so you have only yourselves to blame for your misfortunes.”
