La maschera della Morte Rossa

La «Morte Rossa» devastava da tempo il paese. Nessuna pestilenza era mai stata così fatale, o così orrenda. Il sangue era il suo Avatar e il suo sigillo: il rossore e l’orrore del sangue.

The “Red Death” had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar and its seal—the redness and the horror of blood.

Vi erano dolori acuti, e improvvise vertigini, e poi un profuso sanguinamento dai pori, con la dissoluzione.

There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution.

Le macchie scarlatte sul corpo e specialmente sul volto della vittima erano il bando della peste che la escludeva dall’aiuto e dalla compassione dei suoi simili.

The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men.

E l’intero assalto, il progresso e la fine della malattia, erano gli incidenti di mezz’ora.

And the whole seizure, progress and termination of the disease, were the incidents of half an hour.

Ma il Principe Prospero era felice, impavido e sagace.

But the Prince Prospero was happy and dauntless and sagacious.

Quando i suoi domini furono semidepopolati, convocò alla sua presenza un migliaio di amici sani e spensierati tra i cavalieri e le dame della sua corte, e con questi si ritirò nel profondo isolamento di una delle sue abbazie fortificate.

When his dominions were half depopulated, he summoned to his presence a thousand hale and light-hearted friends from among the knights and dames of his court, and with these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his castellated abbeys.

Questa era una struttura vasta e magnifica, creazione del gusto eccentrico ma augusto del principe stesso. Un muro robusto e alto la cingeva. Questo muro aveva cancelli di ferro.

This was an extensive and magnificent structure, the creation of the prince’s own eccentric yet august taste. A strong and lofty wall girdled it in. This wall had gates of iron.

I cortigiani, una volta entrati, portarono fornaci e pesanti martelli e saldarono i chiavistelli. Decisero di non lasciare alcun mezzo di ingresso o di uscita ai subitanei impulsi della disperazione o del delirio dall’interno. L’abbazia era ampiamente rifornita.

The courtiers, having entered, brought furnaces and massy hammers and welded the bolts. They resolved to leave means neither of ingress or egress to the sudden impulses of despair or of frenzy from within. The abbey was amply provisioned.

Con tali precauzioni i cortigiani potevano sfidare il contagio. Il mondo esterno poteva badare a se stesso. Nel frattempo era follia addolorarsi o pensare. Il principe aveva fornito tutti gli strumenti del piacere.

With such precautions the courtiers might bid defiance to contagion. The external world could take care of itself. In the meantime it was folly to grieve, or to think. The prince had provided all the appliances of pleasure.

C’erano buffoni, c’erano improvvisatori, c’erano ballerini, c’erano musicisti, c’era la Bellezza, c’era il vino. Tutto questo e la sicurezza erano all’interno. All’esterno c’era la «Morte Rossa».

There were buffoons, there were improvisatori, there were ballet-dancers, there were musicians, there was Beauty, there was wine. All these and security were within. Without was the “Red Death.”

Era verso la fine del quinto o sesto mese del suo isolamento, e mentre la pestilenza infuriava più furiosamente all’esterno, che il Principe Prospero intrattenne i suoi mille amici a un ballo in maschera di inusitata magnificenza.

It was toward the close of the fifth or sixth month of his seclusion, and while the pestilence raged most furiously abroad, that the Prince Prospero entertained his thousand friends at a masked ball of the most unusual magnificence.

Era una scena voluttuosa, quella mascherata. Ma prima lasciatemi parlare delle stanze in cui si teneva. Ce n’erano sette: una suite imperiale.

It was a voluptuous scene, that masquerade. But first let me tell of the rooms in which it was held. There were seven—an imperial suite.

In many palaces, however, such suites form a long and straight vista, while the folding doors slide back nearly to the walls on either hand, so that the view of the whole extent is scarcely impeded.

Here the case was very different; as might have been expected from the duke’s love of the bizarre. The apartments were so irregularly disposed that the vision embraced but little more than one at a time.
