El cohete extraordinario

El hijo del Rey iba a casarse, así que hubo regocijos generales. Había esperado todo un año a su novia, y por fin había llegado. Era una princesa rusa y había viajado todo el camino desde Finlandia en un trineo tirado por seis renos.

The King’s son was going to be married, so there were general rejoicings. He had waited a whole year for his bride, and at last she had arrived. She was a Russian Princess, and had driven all the way from Finland in a sledge drawn by six reindeer.

El trineo tenía forma de un gran cisne dorado, y entre las alas del cisne yacía la pequeña princesa.

The sledge was shaped like a great golden swan, and between the swan’s wings lay the little Princess herself.

Su larga capa de armiño le llegaba hasta los pies, en su cabeza llevaba un diminuto gorro de tisú de plata, y estaba tan pálida como el Palacio de Nieve en el que siempre había vivido. Tan pálida estaba que, mientras recorría las calles, toda la gente se maravillaba.

Her long ermine-cloak reached right down to her feet, on her head was a tiny cap of silver tissue, and she was as pale as the Snow Palace in which she had always lived. So pale was she that as she drove through the streets all the people wondered.

«¡Es como una rosa blanca!», gritaban, y le arrojaban flores desde los balcones.

“She is like a white rose!” they cried, and they threw down flowers on her from the balconies.

A las puertas del castillo, el Príncipe esperaba para recibirla. Tenía unos ojos violetas soñadores y su cabello era como oro fino. Cuando la vio, se arrodilló y le besó la mano.

At the gate of the Castle the Prince was waiting to receive her. He had dreamy violet eyes, and his hair was like fine gold. When he saw her he sank upon one knee, and kissed her hand.

«Tu retrato era hermoso», murmuró, «pero tú eres más hermosa que tu retrato»; y la pequeña princesa se sonrojó.

“Your picture was beautiful,” he murmured, “but you are more beautiful than your picture”; and the little Princess blushed.

«Antes era como una rosa blanca», dijo un joven paje a su vecino, «pero ahora es como una rosa roja»; y toda la corte quedó encantada.

“She was like a white rose before,” said a young Page to his neighbour, “but she is like a red rose now”; and the whole Court was delighted.

Durante los tres días siguientes, todo el mundo iba diciendo: «Rosa blanca, rosa roja, rosa roja, rosa blanca»; y el Rey dio órdenes de que se duplicara el sueldo del paje.

For the next three days everybody went about saying, “White rose, Red rose, Red rose, White rose”; and the King gave orders that the Page’s salary was to be doubled.

Como no recibía sueldo alguno, esto no le sirvió de mucho, pero fue considerado un gran honor y se publicó debidamente en la Gaceta de la Corte.

As he received no salary at all this was not of much use to him, but it was considered a great honour, and was duly published in the Court Gazette.

Cuando pasaron los tres días, se celebró la boda. Fue una ceremonia magnífica, y los novios caminaron de la mano bajo un dosel de terciopelo púrpura bordado con pequeñas perlas.

When the three days were over the marriage was celebrated. It was a magnificent ceremony, and the bride and bridegroom walked hand in hand under a canopy of purple velvet embroidered with little pearls.

Luego hubo un banquete de Estado que duró cinco horas. El Príncipe y la Princesa se sentaron en la cabecera del Gran Salón y bebieron de una copa de cristal transparente.

Then there was a State Banquet, which lasted for five hours. The Prince and Princess sat at the top of the Great Hall and drank out of a cup of clear crystal.

Solo los verdaderos amantes podían beber de esta copa, pues si unos labios falsos la tocaban, se volvía gris, opaca y turbia.

Only true lovers could drink out of this cup, for if false lips touched it, it grew grey and dull and cloudy.

«Está claro que se aman», dijo el pequeño paje, «¡tan claro como el cristal!», y el Rey le duplicó el sueldo por segunda vez. «¡Qué honor!», gritaron todos los cortesanos.

“It’s quite clear that they love each other,” said the little Page, “as clear as crystal!” and the King doubled his salary a second time. “What an honour!” cried all the courtiers.

Después del banquete iba a haber un baile. Los novios debían bailar juntos la danza de la rosa, y el Rey había prometido tocar la flauta. Tocaba muy mal, pero nadie se había atrevido nunca a decírselo, porque era el Rey.

After the banquet there was to be a Ball. The bride and bridegroom were to dance the Rose-dance together, and the King had promised to play the flute. He played very badly, but no one had ever dared to tell him so, because he was the King.
