L'histoire d'Io

Dans la ville d’Argos vivait une jeune fille nommée Io. Elle était si belle et si bonne que tous ceux qui la connaissaient l’aimaient, et disaient qu’il n’y en avait pas deux comme elle dans le monde entier.

In the town of Argos there lived a maiden named Io. She was so fair and good that all who knew her loved her, and said that there was no one like her in the whole world.

Lorsque Jupiter, dans sa demeure parmi les nuages, entendit parler d’elle, il descendit à Argos pour la voir.

When Jupiter, in his home in the clouds, heard of her, he came down to Argos to see her.

Elle lui plut tant, et était si aimable et si sage, qu’il revint le lendemain, puis le surlendemain, et encore le jour suivant ; et peu à peu, il resta tout le temps à Argos afin de pouvoir être près d’elle.

She pleased him so much, and was so kind and wise, that he came back the next day and the next and the next; and by and by he stayed in Argos all the time so that he might be near her.

Elle ne savait pas qui il était, mais pensait qu’il s’agissait d’un prince venu d’un pays lointain ; car il se présentait sous les traits d’un jeune homme et ne ressemblait pas au grand roi de la terre et du ciel qu’il était.

She did not know who he was, but thought that he was a prince from some far-off land; for he came in the guise of a young man, and did not look like the great king of earth and sky that he was.

Mais Junon, la reine qui vivait avec Jupiter et partageait son trône au milieu des nuages, n’aimait pas du tout Io.

But Juno, the queen who lived with Jupiter and shared his throne in the midst of the clouds, did not love Io at all.

Lorsqu’elle apprit pourquoi Jupiter restait si longtemps loin de chez lui, elle prit la décision de faire à la belle jeune fille tout le mal qu’elle pourrait ; et un jour, elle descendit à Argos pour voir ce qu’elle pourrait faire.

When she heard why Jupiter stayed from home so long, she made up her mind to do the fair girl all the harm that she could; and one day she went down to Argos to try what could be done.

Jupiter l’aperçut alors qu’elle était encore très loin, et il comprit pourquoi elle était venue. Alors, pour sauver Io d’elle, il transforma la jeune fille en une vache blanche. Il pensa que lorsque Junon serait rentrée chez elle, il ne serait pas difficile de rendre à Io sa forme première.

Jupiter saw her while she was yet a great way off, and he knew why she had come. So, to save Io from her, he changed the maiden to a white cow. He thought that when Juno had gone back home, it would not be hard to give Io her own form again.

Mais quand la reine vit la vache, elle sut qu’il s’agissait d’Io.

But when the queen saw the cow, she knew that it was Io.

“Oh, quelle belle vache tu as là !” dit-elle. “Donne-la-moi, bon Jupiter, donne-la-moi !”

“Oh, what a fine cow you have there!” she said. “Give her to me, good Jupiter, give her to me!”

Jupiter n’aimait pas faire cela ; mais elle insista tant qu’à la fin il céda et la lui laissa. Il pensa qu’il ne s’écoulerait pas longtemps avant qu’il puisse la soustraire à la reine et la transformer à nouveau en jeune fille.

Jupiter did not like to do this; but she coaxed so hard that at last he gave up, and let her have the cow for her own. He thought that it would not be long till he could get her away from the queen, and change her to a girl once more.

Mais Junon était trop avisée pour lui faire confiance. Elle prit la vache par les cornes et l’emmena hors de la ville.

But Juno was too wise to trust him. She took the cow by her horns, and led her out of the town.

“Maintenant, ma douce enfant,” dit-elle, “je veillerai à ce que tu restes sous cette forme aussi longtemps que tu vivras.”

“Now, my sweet maid,” she said, “I will see that you stay in this shape as long as you live.”

Puis elle confia la vache à un étrange gardien nommé Argos, qui n’avait pas seulement deux yeux, comme vous et moi, mais dix fois dix.

Then she gave the cow in charge of a strange watchman named Argus, who had, not two eyes only, as you and I have, but ten times ten.

Et Argos conduisit la vache dans un bosquet et l’attacha à un arbre avec une longue corde, où elle devait rester debout à manger de l’herbe et à crier : “Meuh ! meuh !”

And Argus led the cow to a grove, and tied her by a long rope to a tree, where she had to stand and eat grass, and cry, “Moo! moo!”
