El cuento de Perico, el conejo travieso

Había una vez cuatro conejitos, y sus nombres eran:

Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were--

Flopsy, Mopsy, Pitusa y Perico.

Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and Peter.

Vivían con su mamá en una madriguera, bajo la raíz de un abeto muy grande.

They lived with their Mother in a sand-bank, underneath the root of a very big fir-tree.

—Ahora, mis queridos —dijo la vieja señora Coneja una mañana—, pueden ir a los campos o bajar por el camino, pero no entren en el jardín del señor McGregor: su padre tuvo un accidente allí; la señora McGregor lo metió en un pastel.

‘Now my dears,’ said old Mrs. Rabbit one morning, ‘you may go into the fields or down the lane, but don’t go into Mr. McGregor’s garden: your Father had an accident there; he was put in a pie by Mrs. McGregor.’

—Ahora corran y no hagan travesuras. Yo me voy.

‘Now run along, and don’t get into mischief. I am going out.’

Entonces la vieja señora Coneja tomó una cesta y su paraguas, y atravesó el bosque hacia la panadería. Compró una hogaza de pan integral y cinco bollos de pasas.

Then old Mrs. Rabbit took a basket and her umbrella, and went through the wood to the baker’s. She bought a loaf of brown bread and five currant buns.

Flopsy, Mopsy y Pitusa, que eran conejitas buenas, bajaron por el camino para recoger moras:

Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail, who were good little bunnies, went down the lane to gather blackberries:

¡Pero Perico, que era muy travieso, corrió directamente al jardín del señor McGregor y se escurrió por debajo de la puerta!

But Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to Mr. McGregor’s garden, and squeezed under the gate!

Primero comió unas lechugas y unas judías verdes; y luego comió unos rábanos;

First he ate some lettuces and some French beans; and then he ate some radishes;

Y después, sintiéndose un poco mal, fue a buscar un poco de perejil.

And then, feeling rather sick, he went to look for some parsley.

But round the end of a cucumber frame, whom should he meet but Mr. McGregor!

El señor McGregor estaba de rodillas plantando coles jóvenes, pero saltó y corrió tras Perico, agitando un rastrillo y gritando: «¡Ladrón!»

Mr. McGregor was on his hands and knees planting out young cabbages, but he jumped up and ran after Peter, waving a rake and calling out, ‘Stop thief!’

Perico estaba terriblemente asustado; corrió por todo el jardín, pues había olvidado el camino de regreso a la puerta.

Peter was most dreadfully frightened; he rushed all over the garden, for he had forgotten the way back to the gate.

Perdió uno de sus zapatos entre las coles, y el otro zapato entre las patatas.

He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages, and the other shoe amongst the potatoes.
