La storia di Peter Coniglio

C’era una volta quattro piccoli conigli, e i loro nomi erano--

Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were--

Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail e Peter.

Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and Peter.

Vivevano con la loro mamma in una tana sotto la radice di un grande abete.

They lived with their Mother in a sand-bank, underneath the root of a very big fir-tree.

‘Ora miei cari,’ disse la vecchia signora Coniglio una mattina, ‘potete andare nei campi o giù per il sentiero, ma non andate nel giardino del signor McGregor: vostro padre ha avuto un incidente lì; è stato messo in un pasticcio dalla signora McGregor.’

‘Now my dears,’ said old Mrs. Rabbit one morning, ‘you may go into the fields or down the lane, but don’t go into Mr. McGregor’s garden: your Father had an accident there; he was put in a pie by Mrs. McGregor.’

‘Ora andate a giocare e non fate monellerie. Io vado fuori.’

‘Now run along, and don’t get into mischief. I am going out.’

Poi la vecchia signora Coniglio prese un cestino e il suo ombrello, e attraversò il bosco per andare dal fornaio. Comprò una pagnotta di pane integrale e cinque panini all’uvetta.

Then old Mrs. Rabbit took a basket and her umbrella, and went through the wood to the baker’s. She bought a loaf of brown bread and five currant buns.

Flopsy, Mopsy e Cotton-tail, che erano brave conigliette, andarono giù per il sentiero a raccogliere more:

Ma Peter, che era molto disubbidiente, corse dritto al giardino del signor McGregor e si infilò sotto il cancello!

But Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to Mr. McGregor’s garden, and squeezed under the gate!

Per prima cosa mangiò un po’ di lattuga e dei fagiolini; e poi mangiò dei ravanelli;

First he ate some lettuces and some French beans; and then he ate some radishes;

E poi, sentendosi un po’ male, andò a cercare del prezzemolo.

And then, feeling rather sick, he went to look for some parsley.

Ma girato l’angolo di una serra per cetrioli, chi si trova davanti se non il signor McGregor!

But round the end of a cucumber frame, whom should he meet but Mr. McGregor!

Il signor McGregor era carponi a piantare dei cavoli novelli, ma saltò su e corse dietro a Peter, agitando un rastrello e gridando: ‘Al ladro!’

Mr. McGregor was on his hands and knees planting out young cabbages, but he jumped up and ran after Peter, waving a rake and calling out, ‘Stop thief!’

Peter era spaventatissimo; corse per tutto il giardino, perché aveva dimenticato la strada per tornare al cancello.

Peter was most dreadfully frightened; he rushed all over the garden, for he had forgotten the way back to the gate.

Perse una delle sue scarpette tra i cavoli e l’altra tra le patate.

He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages, and the other shoe amongst the potatoes.
