Pierre Lapin

Il était une fois quatre petits lapins, et ils s’appelaient :

Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were--

Flopsaut, Trotsaut, Queue-de-Coton et Pierre.

Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and Peter.

Ils vivaient avec leur maman dans un terrier, sous la racine d’un très grand sapin.

They lived with their Mother in a sand-bank, underneath the root of a very big fir-tree.

« Maintenant, mes chéris, » dit la vieille Madame Lapin un matin, « vous pouvez aller dans les champs ou descendre le chemin, mais n’allez pas dans le jardin de Monsieur McGregor : votre père y a eu un accident ; il a été mis en tourte par Madame McGregor. »

‘Now my dears,’ said old Mrs. Rabbit one morning, ‘you may go into the fields or down the lane, but don’t go into Mr. McGregor’s garden: your Father had an accident there; he was put in a pie by Mrs. McGregor.’

« Allez, filez maintenant, et ne faites pas de bêtises. Je m’en vais. »

‘Now run along, and don’t get into mischief. I am going out.’

Puis la vieille Madame Lapin prit un panier et son parapluie, et traversa le bois pour aller chez le boulanger. Elle acheta une miche de pain bis et cinq brioches aux raisins.

Then old Mrs. Rabbit took a basket and her umbrella, and went through the wood to the baker’s. She bought a loaf of brown bread and five currant buns.

Flopsaut, Trotsaut et Queue-de-Coton, qui étaient de bons petits lapins, descendirent le chemin pour cueillir des mûres :

Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail, who were good little bunnies, went down the lane to gather blackberries:

Mais Pierre, qui était très désobéissant, courut tout droit vers le jardin de Monsieur McGregor, et se faufila sous la barrière !

But Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to Mr. McGregor’s garden, and squeezed under the gate!

D’abord, il mangea quelques laitues et quelques haricots verts ; puis il mangea quelques radis ;

First he ate some lettuces and some French beans; and then he ate some radishes;

Et ensuite, se sentant un peu malade, il alla chercher du persil.

And then, feeling rather sick, he went to look for some parsley.

Mais au détour d’un châssis de concombre, sur qui tomba-t-il sinon sur Monsieur McGregor !

But round the end of a cucumber frame, whom should he meet but Mr. McGregor!

Monsieur McGregor était à quatre pattes en train de planter de jeunes choux, mais il bondit et courut après Pierre, en agitant un râteau et en criant : « Au voleur ! »

Mr. McGregor was on his hands and knees planting out young cabbages, but he jumped up and ran after Peter, waving a rake and calling out, ‘Stop thief!’

Pierre était terriblement effrayé ; il courut dans tout le jardin, car il avait oublié le chemin du retour vers la barrière.

Peter was most dreadfully frightened; he rushed all over the garden, for he had forgotten the way back to the gate.

Il perdit l’un de ses souliers parmi les choux, et l’autre parmi les pommes de terre.

He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages, and the other shoe amongst the potatoes.
