El cuento de los dos ratones malos

Había una vez una casa de muñecas muy hermosa; era de ladrillo rojo con ventanas blancas, y tenía cortinas de muselina de verdad, una puerta de entrada y una chimenea.

Once upon a time there was a very beautiful doll’s-house; it was red brick with white windows, and it had real muslin curtains and a front door and a chimney.

Pertenecía a dos muñecas llamadas Lucinda y Jane; al menos pertenecía a Lucinda, pero ella nunca pedía las comidas.

It belonged to two Dolls called Lucinda and Jane; at least it belonged to Lucinda, but she never ordered meals.

Jane was the Cook; but she never did any cooking, because the dinner had been bought ready-made, in a box full of shavings.

Una mañana, Lucinda y Jane habían salido a dar un paseo en el cochecito de muñecas. No había nadie en la guardería y estaba muy tranquila.

One morning Lucinda and Jane had gone out for a drive in the doll’s perambulator. There was no one in the nursery, and it was very quiet.

De repente, se oyó un pequeño ruido de forcejeo y arañazos en un rincón cerca de la chimenea, donde había un agujero debajo del rodapié.

Presently there was a little scuffling, scratching noise in a corner near the fire-place, where there was a hole under the skirting-board.

Pulgarcito sacó la cabeza por un momento y luego la volvió a meter.

Tom Thumb put out his head for a moment, and then popped it in again.

Pulgarcito era un ratón.

Tom Thumb was a mouse.

Un minuto después, Hunca Munca, su esposa, también sacó la cabeza; y cuando vio que no había nadie en la guardería, se aventuró a salir sobre el hule debajo de la caja del carbón.

A minute afterwards, Hunca Munca, his wife, put her head out, too; and when she saw that there was no one in the nursery, she ventured out on the oilcloth under the coal-box.

La casa de muñecas estaba al otro lado de la chimenea. Pulgarcito y Hunca Munca cruzaron con cautela la alfombra de la chimenea. Empujaron la puerta principal; no estaba cerrada.

The doll’s-house stood at the other side of the fire-place. Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca went cautiously across the hearthrug. They pushed the front door--it was not fast.

Pulgarcito y Hunca Munca subieron las escaleras y se asomaron al comedor. ¡Entonces chillaron de alegría!

Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca went upstairs and peeped into the dining-room. Then they squeaked with joy!

¡Qué cena tan encantadora estaba servida sobre la mesa! Había cucharas de estaño, cuchillos y tenedores de plomo, y dos sillitas de muñecas; ¡todo muy práctico!

Such a lovely dinner was laid out upon the table! There were tin spoons, and lead knives and forks, and two dolly-chairs--all so convenient!

Pulgarcito se puso manos a la obra de inmediato para trinchar el jamón. Era de un hermoso amarillo brillante, veteado de rojo.

Tom Thumb set to work at once to carve the ham. It was a beautiful shiny yellow, streaked with red.
