La storia dei due topi cattivi

C’era una volta una casa di bambole bellissima; era di mattoni rossi con finestre bianche, e aveva vere tendine di mussola, una porta d’ingresso e un camino.

Once upon a time there was a very beautiful doll’s-house; it was red brick with white windows, and it had real muslin curtains and a front door and a chimney.

Apparteneva a due bambole chiamate Lucinda e Jane; o almeno apparteneva a Lucinda, ma lei non ordinava mai i pasti.

It belonged to two Dolls called Lucinda and Jane; at least it belonged to Lucinda, but she never ordered meals.

Jane era la cuoca; ma non cucinava mai, perché la cena era stata comprata già pronta, in una scatola piena di trucioli.

Jane was the Cook; but she never did any cooking, because the dinner had been bought ready-made, in a box full of shavings.

C’erano due aragoste rosse e un prosciutto, un pesce, un budino e alcune pere e arance.

There were two red lobsters and a ham, a fish, a pudding, and some pears and oranges.

Non si staccavano dai piatti, ma erano estremamente belle.

They would not come off the plates, but they were extremely beautiful.

Una mattina Lucinda e Jane erano uscite per un giro nella carrozzina delle bambole. Non c’era nessuno nella stanza dei bambini, e c’era molto silenzio.

One morning Lucinda and Jane had gone out for a drive in the doll’s perambulator. There was no one in the nursery, and it was very quiet.

A un tratto si sentì un piccolo scalpiccio, un rumore di graffi in un angolo vicino al camino, dove c’era un buco sotto il battiscopa.

Presently there was a little scuffling, scratching noise in a corner near the fire-place, where there was a hole under the skirting-board.

Tom Pollice fece capolino per un momento, e poi lo ritirò dentro.

Tom Thumb put out his head for a moment, and then popped it in again.

Tom Pollice era un topo.

Tom Thumb was a mouse.

Un minuto dopo, anche Hunca Munca, sua moglie, fece capolino; e quando vide che non c’era nessuno nella stanza, si avventurò sulla tela cerata sotto la carboniera.

A minute afterwards, Hunca Munca, his wife, put her head out, too; and when she saw that there was no one in the nursery, she ventured out on the oilcloth under the coal-box.

La casa delle bambole si trovava dall’altra parte del camino. Tom Pollice e Hunca Munca attraversarono cautamente il tappeto davanti al fuoco. Spinsero la porta d’ingresso: non era chiusa a chiave.

The doll’s-house stood at the other side of the fire-place. Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca went cautiously across the hearthrug. They pushed the front door--it was not fast.

Tom Pollice e Hunca Munca salirono al piano di sopra e sbirciarono nella sala da pranzo. Poi squittirono di gioia!

Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca went upstairs and peeped into the dining-room. Then they squeaked with joy!

Una cena così deliziosa era servita sulla tavola! C’erano cucchiaini di stagno, coltelli e forchette di piombo e due sedioline per bambole: tutto così comodo!

Such a lovely dinner was laid out upon the table! There were tin spoons, and lead knives and forks, and two dolly-chairs--all so convenient!

Tom Pollice si mise subito al lavoro per affettare il prosciutto. Era di un bel giallo lucido, striato di rosso.

Tom Thumb set to work at once to carve the ham. It was a beautiful shiny yellow, streaked with red.
