Vingt ans après

Le policier en patrouille remontait l’avenue avec prestance. Cette prestance était habituelle et non feinte, car les spectateurs étaient rares.

The policeman on the beat moved up the avenue impressively. The impressiveness was habitual and not for show, for spectators were few.

Il était à peine 22 heures, mais des rafales de vent glaciales, chargées d’une odeur de pluie, avaient presque vidé les rues.

The time was barely 10 o’clock at night, but chilly gusts of wind with a taste of rain in them had well nigh de-peopled the streets.

Trying doors as he went, twirling his club with many intricate and artful movements, turning now and then to cast his watchful eye adown the pacific thoroughfare, the officer, with his stalwart form and slight swagger, made a fine picture of a guardian of the peace.

Le quartier était de ceux qui se couchent tôt. De temps en temps, on pouvait apercevoir les lumières d’un bureau de tabac ou d’un restaurant ouvert toute la nuit ; mais la plupart des portes appartenaient à des commerces fermés depuis longtemps.

The vicinity was one that kept early hours. Now and then you might see the lights of a cigar store or of an all-night lunch counter; but the majority of the doors belonged to business places that had long since been closed.

Arrivé à mi-chemin d’un certain pâté de maisons, le policier ralentit soudain le pas. Dans l’embrasure d’une quincaillerie plongée dans l’obscurité, un homme était appuyé, un cigare éteint à la bouche. Alors que le policier s’approchait, l’homme prit la parole rapidement.

When about midway of a certain block the policeman suddenly slowed his walk. In the doorway of a darkened hardware store a man leaned, with an unlighted cigar in his mouth. As the policeman walked up to him the man spoke up quickly.

« Tout va bien, agent », dit-il de façon rassurante. « J’attends juste un ami. C’est un rendez-vous pris il y a vingt ans. Ça vous semble un peu bizarre, n’est-ce pas ? Eh bien, je vous expliquerai si vous voulez vous assurer que tout est en règle. »

“It’s all right, officer,” he said, reassuringly. “I’m just waiting for a friend. It’s an appointment made twenty years ago. Sounds a little funny to you, doesn’t it? Well, I’ll explain if you’d like to make certain it’s all straight.

« Il y a environ vingt ans, il y avait un restaurant là où se trouve ce magasin : le restaurant de ‘Big Joe’ Brady. »

About that long ago there used to be a restaurant where this store stands—‘Big Joe’ Brady’s restaurant.”

« Jusqu’à il y a cinq ans », dit le policier. « Il a été démoli à ce moment-là. »

“Until five years ago,” said the policeman. “It was torn down then.”

L’homme dans l’embrasure craqua une allumette et alluma son cigare. La lumière révéla un visage pâle à la mâchoire carrée, des yeux perçants et une petite cicatrice blanche près du sourcil droit. Son épingle de cravate était un gros diamant, monté de façon singulière.

The man in the doorway struck a match and lit his cigar. The light showed a pale, square-jawed face with keen eyes, and a little white scar near his right eyebrow. His scarfpin was a large diamond, oddly set.

« Ce soir, cela fait vingt ans », dit l’homme, « que j’ai dîné ici, chez ‘Big Joe’ Brady, avec Jimmy Wells, mon meilleur copain, le type le plus formidable au monde. Lui et moi avons été élevés ici, à New York, comme deux frères, ensemble. »

“Twenty years ago to-night,” said the man, “I dined here at ‘Big Joe’ Brady’s with Jimmy Wells, my best chum, and the finest chap in the world. He and I were raised here in New York, just like two brothers, together.

« J’avais dix-huit ans et Jimmy vingt. Le lendemain matin, je devais partir pour l’Ouest afin de faire fortune. On n’aurait jamais pu arracher Jimmy à New York ; il pensait que c’était le seul endroit sur terre. »

I was eighteen and Jimmy was twenty. The next morning I was to start for the West to make my fortune. You couldn’t have dragged Jimmy out of New York; he thought it was the only place on earth.

« Eh bien, nous avons convenu ce soir-là que nous nous retrouverions ici exactement vingt ans plus tard, jour pour jour et heure pour heure, quelles que soient nos situations ou la distance que nous aurions à parcourir. »

Well, we agreed that night that we would meet here again exactly twenty years from that date and time, no matter what our conditions might be or from what distance we might have to come.

« Nous nous sommes dit qu’en vingt ans, chacun de nous aurait accompli son destin et fait fortune, quelle qu’elle soit. »

We figured that in twenty years each of us ought to have our destiny worked out and our fortunes made, whatever they were going to be.”

« Ça semble assez intéressant », dit le policier. « Un peu long entre deux rencontres, cependant, me semble-t-il. Vous n’avez pas eu de nouvelles de votre ami depuis votre départ ? »

“It sounds pretty interesting,” said the policeman. “Rather a long time between meets, though, it seems to me. Haven’t you heard from your friend since you left?”
