Diógenes el sabio

En Corinto, Grecia, vivía un hombre muy sabio llamado Diógenes. Hombres de todas partes del país venían a verlo y a escuchar sus palabras.

At Corinth, in Greece, there lived a very wise man whose name was Diogenes. Men came from all parts of the land to see him and hear him talk.

Pero, a pesar de su sabiduría, tenía costumbres muy extrañas. No creía que nadie debiera poseer más cosas de las que realmente necesitaba; y decía que nadie necesitaba mucho.

But wise as he was, he had some very queer ways. He did not believe that any man ought to have more things than he really needed; and he said that no man needed much.

Por eso no vivía en una casa, sino que dormía en una tina o barril, que rodaba de un lugar a otro. Pasaba sus días sentado al sol, diciendo cosas sabias a quienes lo rodeaban.

And so he did not live in a house, but slept in a tub or barrel, which he rolled about from place to place. He spent his days sitting in the sun, and saying wise things to those who were around him.

Un día, al mediodía, se vio a Diógenes caminando por las calles con una linterna encendida, mirando a todas partes como si buscara algo.

At noon one day, Diogenes was seen walking through the streets with a lighted lantern, and looking all around as if in search of something.

¿Por qué llevas una linterna cuando el sol brilla?, le preguntó alguien.

“Why do you carry a lantern when the sun is shining?” some one said.

Estoy buscando a un hombre honesto, respondió Diógenes.

“I am looking for an honest man,” answered Diogenes.

Cuando Alejandro Magno fue a Corinto, todos los hombres más importantes de la ciudad salieron a verlo y a elogiarlo. Pero Diógenes no fue; y era el único hombre cuya opinión le importaba a Alejandro.

When Alexander the Great went to Corinth, all the foremost men in the city came out to see him and to praise him. But Diogenes did not come; and he was the only man for whose opinions Alexander cared.

Y así, como el sabio no iba a ver al rey, el rey fue a ver al sabio. Encontró a Diógenes en un lugar apartado, tumbado en el suelo junto a su tina. Estaba disfrutando del calor y la luz del sol.

And so, since the wise man would not come to see the king, the king went to see the wise man. He found Diogenes in an out-of-the-way place, lying on the ground by his tub. He was enjoying the heat and the light of the sun.

Cuando vio al rey y a una gran multitud acercarse, se incorporó y miró a Alejandro. Alejandro lo saludó y le dijo:

When he saw the king and a great many people coming, he sat up and looked at Alexander. Alexander greeted him and said,--

Diógenes, he oído hablar mucho de tu sabiduría. ¿Hay algo que pueda hacer por ti?

“Diogenes, I have heard a great deal about your wisdom. Is there anything that I can do for you?”

Sí, dijo Diógenes. Puedes hacerte un poco a un lado, para no quitarme la luz del sol.

“Yes,” said Diogenes. “You can stand a little on one side, so as not to keep the sunshine from me.”

Esta respuesta fue tan diferente a lo que esperaba, que el rey se quedó muy sorprendido. Pero no le causó enojo; solo hizo que admirara aún más a aquel hombre extraño. Cuando se dio la vuelta para marcharse, dijo a sus oficiales:

This answer was so different from what he expected, that the king was much surprised. But it did not make him angry; it only made him admire the strange man all the more. When he turned to ride back, he said to his officers,--

Digáis lo que digáis; si no fuera Alejandro, me gustaría ser Diógenes.

“Say what you will; if I were not Alexander, I would like to be Diogenes.”
