Diogène le Sage

À Corinthe, en Grèce, vivait un homme très sage nommé Diogène. Des hommes venaient de toutes les contrées pour le voir et l’entendre parler.

At Corinth, in Greece, there lived a very wise man whose name was Diogenes. Men came from all parts of the land to see him and hear him talk.

Mais, aussi sage qu’il fût, il avait des manières bien étranges. Il ne croyait pas qu’un homme dût posséder plus de choses qu’il n’en avait réellement besoin ; et il disait que personne n’avait besoin de grand-chose.

But wise as he was, he had some very queer ways. He did not believe that any man ought to have more things than he really needed; and he said that no man needed much.

C’est pourquoi il ne vivait pas dans une maison, mais dormait dans une cuve ou un tonneau qu’il roulait d’un endroit à l’autre. Il passait ses journées assis au soleil, à dire des choses sages à ceux qui l’entouraient.

And so he did not live in a house, but slept in a tub or barrel, which he rolled about from place to place. He spent his days sitting in the sun, and saying wise things to those who were around him.

Un jour, à midi, on vit Diogène marcher dans les rues avec une lanterne allumée, regardant tout autour de lui comme s’il cherchait quelque chose.

At noon one day, Diogenes was seen walking through the streets with a lighted lantern, and looking all around as if in search of something.

« Pourquoi portes-tu une lanterne alors que le soleil brille ? » demanda quelqu’un.

“Why do you carry a lantern when the sun is shining?” some one said.

« Je cherche un homme honnête », répondit Diogène.

“I am looking for an honest man,” answered Diogenes.

Lorsque Alexandre le Grand se rendit à Corinthe, tous les hommes les plus éminents de la ville sortirent pour le voir et le louer. Mais Diogène ne vint pas ; et il était le seul homme dont Alexandre se souciait de l’opinion.

When Alexander the Great went to Corinth, all the foremost men in the city came out to see him and to praise him. But Diogenes did not come; and he was the only man for whose opinions Alexander cared.

Ainsi, puisque le sage ne voulait pas venir voir le roi, le roi alla voir le sage. Il trouva Diogène dans un endroit retiré, allongé sur le sol près de son tonneau. Il profitait de la chaleur et de la lumière du soleil.

And so, since the wise man would not come to see the king, the king went to see the wise man. He found Diogenes in an out-of-the-way place, lying on the ground by his tub. He was enjoying the heat and the light of the sun.

Lorsqu’il vit le roi et une foule de gens arriver, il se redressa et regarda Alexandre. Alexandre le salua et dit :

When he saw the king and a great many people coming, he sat up and looked at Alexander. Alexander greeted him and said,--

« Diogène, j’ai beaucoup entendu parler de ta sagesse. Y a-t-il quelque chose que je puisse faire pour toi ? »

“Diogenes, I have heard a great deal about your wisdom. Is there anything that I can do for you?”

« Oui, dit Diogène. Tu peux te décaler un peu sur le côté, pour ne pas me cacher le soleil. »

“Yes,” said Diogenes. “You can stand a little on one side, so as not to keep the sunshine from me.”

Cette réponse était si différente de ce à quoi il s’attendait que le roi fut très surpris. Mais cela ne le mit pas en colère ; cela ne fit qu’accroître son admiration pour cet homme étrange. En se retournant pour repartir, il dit à ses officiers :

This answer was so different from what he expected, that the king was much surprised. But it did not make him angry; it only made him admire the strange man all the more. When he turned to ride back, he said to his officers,--

« Dites ce que vous voudrez ; si je n’étais pas Alexandre, j’aimerais être Diogène. »

“Say what you will; if I were not Alexander, I would like to be Diogenes.”
