Diogene il saggio

A Corinto, in Grecia, viveva un uomo molto saggio di nome Diogene. Gli uomini venivano da ogni parte del paese per vederlo e sentirlo parlare.

At Corinth, in Greece, there lived a very wise man whose name was Diogenes. Men came from all parts of the land to see him and hear him talk.

Ma per quanto fosse saggio, aveva dei modi molto bizzarri. Non credeva che un uomo dovesse possedere più cose di quelle di cui avesse realmente bisogno; e diceva che nessuno ha bisogno di molto.

But wise as he was, he had some very queer ways. He did not believe that any man ought to have more things than he really needed; and he said that no man needed much.

E così non viveva in una casa, ma dormiva in una tinozza o botte, che faceva rotolare da un posto all’altro. Trascorreva le sue giornate seduto al sole, dicendo cose sagge a coloro che gli stavano intorno.

And so he did not live in a house, but slept in a tub or barrel, which he rolled about from place to place. He spent his days sitting in the sun, and saying wise things to those who were around him.

A mezzogiorno di un giorno, Diogene fu visto camminare per le strade con una lanterna accesa, guardandosi intorno come se cercasse qualcosa.

At noon one day, Diogenes was seen walking through the streets with a lighted lantern, and looking all around as if in search of something.

“Perché porti una lanterna quando il sole splende?” disse qualcuno.

“Why do you carry a lantern when the sun is shining?” some one said.

“Sto cercando un uomo onesto”, rispose Diogene.

“I am looking for an honest man,” answered Diogenes.

Quando Alessandro Magno andò a Corinto, tutti gli uomini più importanti della città uscirono per vederlo e lodarlo. Ma Diogene non venne; ed era l’unico uomo di cui ad Alessandro importasse l’opinione.

When Alexander the Great went to Corinth, all the foremost men in the city came out to see him and to praise him. But Diogenes did not come; and he was the only man for whose opinions Alexander cared.

E così, dato che il saggio non voleva andare a vedere il re, il re andò a vedere il saggio. Trovò Diogene in un luogo appartato, sdraiato a terra accanto alla sua tinozza. Si stava godendo il calore e la luce del sole.

And so, since the wise man would not come to see the king, the king went to see the wise man. He found Diogenes in an out-of-the-way place, lying on the ground by his tub. He was enjoying the heat and the light of the sun.

Quando vide il re e una gran folla di persone arrivare, si mise a sedere e guardò Alessandro. Alessandro lo salutò e disse:

When he saw the king and a great many people coming, he sat up and looked at Alexander. Alexander greeted him and said,--

“Diogene, ho sentito parlare molto della tua saggezza. C’è qualcosa che posso fare per te?”

“Diogenes, I have heard a great deal about your wisdom. Is there anything that I can do for you?”

“Sì”, disse Diogene. “Puoi spostarti un po’ di lato, così da non togliermi il sole.”

“Yes,” said Diogenes. “You can stand a little on one side, so as not to keep the sunshine from me.”

Questa risposta era così diversa da ciò che si aspettava, che il re ne rimase molto sorpreso. Ma non lo fece arrabbiare; lo portò solo ad ammirare ancora di più quello strano uomo. Quando si voltò per tornare indietro, disse ai suoi ufficiali:

This answer was so different from what he expected, that the king was much surprised. But it did not make him angry; it only made him admire the strange man all the more. When he turned to ride back, he said to his officers,--

“Dite quello che volete; se non fossi Alessandro, mi piacerebbe essere Diogene.”

“Say what you will; if I were not Alexander, I would like to be Diogenes.”
