Los trescientos valientes

Toda Grecia estaba en peligro. Un poderoso ejército, dirigido por el gran rey de Persia, había venido desde el este. Marchaba a lo largo de la costa y en pocos días estaría en Grecia.

All Greece was in danger. A mighty army, led by the great King of Persia, had come from the east. It was marching along the seashore, and in a few days would be in Greece.

El gran rey había enviado mensajeros a cada ciudad y estado, ordenándoles que le entregaran agua y tierra como señal de que la tierra y el mar eran suyos. Pero ellos dijeron:

The great king had sent messengers into every city and state, bidding them give him water and earth in token that the land and the sea were his. But they said,--

«No: seremos libres».

“No: we will be free.”

Y así hubo un gran revuelo en toda la tierra. Los hombres se armaron y se dieron prisa en salir para rechazar a su enemigo; y las mujeres se quedaron en casa, llorando, esperando y temblando de miedo.

And so there was a great stir throughout all the land. The men armed themselves, and made haste to go out and drive back their foe; and the women staid at home, weeping and waiting, and trembling with fear.

Solo había un camino por el que el ejército persa podía entrar en Grecia por ese lado, y era a través de un estrecho paso entre las montañas y el mar. Este paso estaba custodiado por Leónidas, el rey de los espartanos, con trescientos soldados espartanos.

There was only one way by which the Persian army could go into Greece on that side, and that was by a narrow pass between the mountains and the sea. This pass was guarded by Leonidas, the King of the Spartans, with three hundred Spartan soldiers.

Pronto se vio venir a los soldados persas. Eran tantos que nadie podía contarlos. ¿Cómo podía un puñado de hombres esperar resistir contra una hueste tan grande?

Soon the Persian soldiers were seen coming. There were so many of them that no man could count them. How could a handful of men hope to stand against so great a host?

Y, sin embargo, Leónidas y sus espartanos mantuvieron su posición. Habían decidido morir en su puesto. Alguien les trajo la noticia de que había tantos persas que sus flechas oscurecían el sol.

And yet Leonidas and his Spartans held their ground. They had made up their minds to die at their post. Some one brought them word that there were so many Persians that their arrows darkened the sun.

«Mucho mejor», dijeron los espartanos; «lucharemos a la sombra».

“So much the better,” said the Spartans; “we shall fight in the shade.”

Valientemente permanecieron en el estrecho paso. Valientemente se enfrentaron a sus enemigos. Para los espartanos no existía el miedo. Los persas avanzaron, solo para encontrar la muerte en las puntas de sus lanzas.

Bravely they stood in the narrow pass. Bravely they faced their foes. To Spartans there was no such thing as fear. The Persians came forward, only to meet death at the points of their spears.

Pero uno a uno los espartanos cayeron. Al final sus lanzas se rompieron; aun así, permanecieron hombro con hombro, luchando hasta el último momento. Algunos lucharon con espadas, otros con dagas y otros solo con sus puños y dientes.

But one by one the Spartans fell. At last their spears were broken; yet still they stood side by side, fighting to the last. Some fought with swords, some with daggers, and some with only their fists and teeth.

Durante todo el día, el ejército de los persas fue mantenido a raya. Pero cuando el sol se puso, no quedaba ni un solo espartano con vida. Donde habían estado, solo quedaba un montón de cadáveres, erizado de lanzas y flechas.

All day long the army of the Persians was kept at bay. But when the sun went down, there was not one Spartan left alive. Where they had stood there was only a heap of the slain, all bristled over with spears and arrows.

Veinte mil soldados persas habían caído ante aquel puñado de hombres. Y Grecia fue salvada.

Twenty thousand Persian soldiers had fallen before that handful of men. And Greece was saved.

Han pasado miles de años desde entonces; pero a los hombres todavía les gusta contar la historia de Leónidas y los trescientos valientes que murieron por el bien de su país.

Thousands of years have passed since then; but men still like to tell the story of Leonidas and the brave three hundred who died for their country’s sake.
