Le Pêcheur et sa femme

Il était une fois un pêcheur qui vivait avec sa femme dans une porcherie, tout près du bord de la mer.

There was once a fisherman who lived with his wife in a pigsty, close by the seaside.

Le pêcheur passait ses journées entières à pêcher ; et un jour, alors qu’il était assis sur le rivage avec sa canne, observant les vagues étincelantes et surveillant sa ligne, soudain, son bouchon fut entraîné profondément dans l’eau : et en tirant, il en sortit un gros poisson.

The fisherman used to go out all day long a-fishing; and one day, as he sat on the shore with his rod, looking at the sparkling waves and watching his line, all on a sudden his float was dragged away deep into the water: and in drawing it up he pulled out a great fish.

Mais le poisson dit : « Je t’en prie, laisse-moi vivre ! Je ne suis pas un vrai poisson ; je suis un prince enchanté : remets-moi dans l’eau et laisse-moi partir ! » « Oh, ho ! »

But the fish said, ‘Pray let me live! I am not a real fish; I am an enchanted prince: put me in the water again, and let me go!’ ‘Oh, ho!’

dit l’homme, « tu n’as pas besoin de faire tant de discours à ce sujet ; je ne veux rien avoir à faire avec un poisson qui parle : alors nage, monsieur, aussi vite qu’il te plaira ! »

said the man, ‘you need not make so many words about the matter; I will have nothing to do with a fish that can talk: so swim away, sir, as soon as you please!’

Puis il le remit dans l’eau, et le poisson fila tout droit vers le fond, laissant derrière lui une longue traînée de sang sur la vague.

Then he put him back into the water, and the fish darted straight down to the bottom, and left a long streak of blood behind him on the wave.

Quand le pêcheur rentra chez sa femme dans la porcherie, il lui raconta comment il avait attrapé un gros poisson, comment celui-ci lui avait dit qu’il était un prince enchanté, et comment, en l’entendant parler, il l’avait laissé repartir. « Ne lui as-tu rien demandé ? »

When the fisherman went home to his wife in the pigsty, he told her how he had caught a great fish, and how it had told him it was an enchanted prince, and how, on hearing it speak, he had let it go again. ‘Did not you ask it for anything?’

dit la femme, « nous vivons très misérablement ici, dans cette sale porcherie ; retourne dire au poisson que nous voulons une petite chaumière confortable. »

said the wife, ‘we live very wretchedly here, in this nasty dirty pigsty; do go back and tell the fish we want a snug little cottage.’

Le pêcheur n’aimait pas beaucoup cette affaire : cependant, il alla au bord de la mer ; et quand il y revint, l’eau semblait toute jaune et verte. Et il se tint au bord de l’eau et dit :

The fisherman did not much like the business: however, he went to the seashore; and when he came back there the water looked all yellow and green. And he stood at the water’s edge, and said:

« Ô homme de la mer ! Écoute-moi ! Ma femme Ilsabill Veut faire à sa guise, Et m’a envoyé te demander une faveur ! »

‘O man of the sea! Hearken to me! My wife Ilsabill Will have her own will, And hath sent me to beg a boon of thee!’

Alors le poisson vint nager vers lui et dit : « Eh bien, quelle est sa volonté ? Que veut ta femme ? » « Ah ! »

Then the fish came swimming to him, and said, ‘Well, what is her will? What does your wife want?’ ‘Ah!’

dit le pêcheur, « elle dit que quand je t’ai attrapé, j’aurais dû te demander quelque chose avant de te laisser partir ; elle ne veut plus vivre dans la porcherie et veut une petite chaumière confortable. »

said the fisherman, ‘she says that when I had caught you, I ought to have asked you for something before I let you go; she does not like living any longer in the pigsty, and wants a snug little cottage.’

« Rentre chez toi, alors », dit le poisson ; « elle est déjà dans la chaumière ! » L’homme rentra donc chez lui et vit sa femme debout à la porte d’une jolie petite chaumière bien propre. « Entre, entre ! » dit-elle ; « n’est-ce pas bien mieux que la sale porcherie que nous avions ? »

‘Go home, then,’ said the fish; ‘she is in the cottage already!’ So the man went home, and saw his wife standing at the door of a nice trim little cottage. ‘Come in, come in!’ said she; ‘is not this much better than the filthy pigsty we had?’

Et il y avait un salon, une chambre et une cuisine ; et derrière la chaumière, il y avait un petit jardin planté de toutes sortes de fleurs et de fruits ; et derrière, une cour pleine de canards et de poulets. « Ah ! »

And there was a parlour, and a bedchamber, and a kitchen; and behind the cottage there was a little garden, planted with all sorts of flowers and fruits; and there was a courtyard behind, full of ducks and chickens. ‘Ah!’
