Le Corbeau et le Renard

Un beau matin, alors que le Renard suivait son flair aiguisé à travers les bois en quête d’un morceau à se mettre sous la dent, il aperçut un Corbeau sur la branche d’un arbre au-dessus de lui. Ce n’était nullement le premier Corbeau que le Renard voyait.

One bright morning as the Fox was following his sharp nose through the wood in search of a bite to eat, he saw a Crow on the limb of a tree overhead. This was by no means the first Crow the Fox had ever seen.

Ce qui attira son attention cette fois-ci et le fit s’arrêter pour un second regard, c’est que l’heureux Corbeau tenait un morceau de fromage dans son bec.

What caught his attention this time and made him stop for a second look, was that the lucky Crow held a bit of cheese in her beak.

“Inutile de chercher plus loin”, pensa le rusé Maître Renard. “Voici une bouchée délicate pour mon petit-déjeuner.”

“No need to search any farther,” thought sly Master Fox. “Here is a dainty bite for my breakfast.”

Il trottina jusqu’au pied de l’arbre où le Corbeau était perché et, levant les yeux avec admiration, il s’écria : “Bonjour, créature magnifique !”

Up he trotted to the foot of the tree in which the Crow was sitting, and looking up admiringly, he cried, “Good-morning, beautiful creature!”

Le Corbeau, la tête penchée sur le côté, observait le Renard avec méfiance. Mais il garda son bec fermement clos sur le fromage et ne répondit pas à son salut.

The Crow, her head cocked on one side, watched the Fox suspiciously. But she kept her beak tightly closed on the cheese and did not return his greeting.

“Quelle créature charmante !” dit le Renard. “Comme ses plumes brillent ! Quelle belle forme et quelles ailes splendides ! Un si merveilleux Oiseau devrait avoir une voix très ravissante, puisque tout le reste chez elle est si parfait.

“What a charming creature she is!” said the Fox. “How her feathers shine! What a beautiful form and what splendid wings! Such a wonderful Bird should have a very lovely voice, since everything else about her is so perfect.

Si elle pouvait chanter ne serait-ce qu’une chanson, je sais que je la proclamerais Reine des Oiseaux.”

Could she sing just one song, I know I should hail her Queen of Birds.”

En écoutant ces paroles flatteuses, le Corbeau oublia toute sa méfiance, ainsi que son petit-déjeuner. Il avait très envie d’être appelé Reine des Oiseaux.

Listening to these flattering words, the Crow forgot all her suspicion, and also her breakfast. She wanted very much to be called Queen of Birds.

Alors il ouvrit grand le bec pour pousser son croassement le plus fort, et le fromage tomba droit dans la gueule ouverte du Renard.

So she opened her beak wide to utter her loudest caw, and down fell the cheese straight into the Fox’s open mouth.

“Merci”, dit doucement Maître Renard en s’éloignant. “Bien qu’elle soit éraillée, tu as une voix, c’est certain. Mais où est ton esprit ?”

“Thank you,” said Master Fox sweetly, as he walked off. “Though it is cracked, you have a voice sure enough. But where are your wits?”

Le flatteur vit aux dépens de ceux qui l’écoutent.

The flatterer lives at the expense of those who will listen to him.
