La volpe e il corvo

Una luminosa mattina, mentre la Volpe seguiva il suo fiuto acuto attraverso il bosco in cerca di qualcosa da mangiare, vide un Corvo sul ramo di un albero sopra di sé. Non era affatto il primo Corvo che la Volpe avesse mai visto.

One bright morning as the Fox was following his sharp nose through the wood in search of a bite to eat, he saw a Crow on the limb of a tree overhead. This was by no means the first Crow the Fox had ever seen.

Ciò che attirò la sua attenzione questa volta e la fece fermare per un secondo sguardo, fu che il fortunato Corvo teneva un pezzetto di formaggio nel becco.

What caught his attention this time and made him stop for a second look, was that the lucky Crow held a bit of cheese in her beak.

“Non c’è bisogno di cercare oltre”, pensò l’astuto Mastro Volpe. “Ecco un bocconcino prelibato per la mia colazione.”

“No need to search any farther,” thought sly Master Fox. “Here is a dainty bite for my breakfast.”

Trottò fino ai piedi dell’albero su cui il Corvo era appollaiato e, guardando in su con ammirazione, esclamò: “Buongiorno, splendida creatura!”

Up he trotted to the foot of the tree in which the Crow was sitting, and looking up admiringly, he cried, “Good-morning, beautiful creature!”

Il Corvo, con la testa inclinata di lato, osservava la Volpe con sospetto. Ma tenne il becco ben chiuso sul formaggio e non ricambiò il saluto.

The Crow, her head cocked on one side, watched the Fox suspiciously. But she kept her beak tightly closed on the cheese and did not return his greeting.

“Che creatura affascinante è!” disse la Volpe. “Come brillano le sue piume! Che forma bellissima e che ali splendide! Un Uccello così meraviglioso dovrebbe avere una voce incantevole, dato che tutto il resto in lei è così perfetto.”

“What a charming creature she is!” said the Fox. “How her feathers shine! What a beautiful form and what splendid wings! Such a wonderful Bird should have a very lovely voice, since everything else about her is so perfect.

Se potesse cantare anche solo una canzone, so che la acclamerei Regina degli Uccelli.”

Could she sing just one song, I know I should hail her Queen of Birds.”

Ascoltando queste parole lusinghiere, il Corvo dimenticò ogni sospetto e anche la sua colazione. Desiderava ardentemente essere chiamata Regina degli Uccelli.

Listening to these flattering words, the Crow forgot all her suspicion, and also her breakfast. She wanted very much to be called Queen of Birds.

Così aprì bene il becco per emettere il suo gracchiare più forte, e il formaggio cadde dritto nella bocca aperta della Volpe.

So she opened her beak wide to utter her loudest caw, and down fell the cheese straight into the Fox’s open mouth.

“Grazie”, disse Mastro Volpe dolcemente, mentre si allontanava. “Sebbene sia incrinata, hai certamente una voce. Ma dove è finito il tuo buonsenso?”

“Thank you,” said Master Fox sweetly, as he walked off. “Though it is cracked, you have a voice sure enough. But where are your wits?”

L’adulatore vive a spese di chi lo sta ad ascoltare.

The flatterer lives at the expense of those who will listen to him.
